by placing the control weight higher up it counter weights the shaft and coil creating a balanced unit for less stress on the arm.

Guy, I have (3) of the Lightning Rod Straight Shafts, that are sold by DeMarcoDetectors.com, in Millville, N.J. I really LIKE THEM!! VERY WELL MADE!! They sell for around $100, or a little less.
They have a baked on black finish, like your original S-shaft, that has a baked on blue finish. More holes for more height adjustments, than some of the other ones. DeMarco Detectors also has these straight shafts for the OLDER Model EXCALIBURS, which I have both models. He should have a picture of the Lightning Rod Shaft on his website. If you call him, or e-mail him, tell him that NamVetLes referred you.
I've never used or seen up close the longer shaft, that someone sells, that has the controls mounted higher up on the shaft, so that it extends beyond the elbow. Hope this helps, good luck, hh, NamVetLesTreasureSeeker

and I really like it! It is very well balanced and I can hunt for six hours without any problem. The guy that makes them is in my detecting club. He sells them on eBay under the user ID of beachvacuum. He doesn't have any listed right now but he is making more. Should be available soon. The construction is top notch. Here is a photo of the one I got from him. ~John
PS. I have the older style Excalibur. He made this one special for me. I think he sells the older style but there would probably be some delay involved.
