Another run-in with the groundskeeper and upgraded my dimeman status

I had a couple hours to kill this afternoon (temp lay-off from work) and went back to the old farmhouse. I wasn't even there 5 minutes digging up a target and one of the park employees shows up. I look up and lo and behold it was the same groundskeeper that "shined" me on the other end of town this past summer lol. "Oh good grief" I am thinking to myself. Funny thing is, he doesn't even remember me. So he starts talking about this park that is off limits to detectorists. ( I start drooling lol ) as this place is "THE place" that every detectorist dreams of. He starts telling me again of this 1780's colonial coin that he found. Well, this summer he said it was a 1793 Connecticut cent. Now my question is this: if you found a super find like his, wouldn't you remember the very place you found it and the exact year of the coin? This guy couldn't remember the exact year now he says it is a 1783, 1784 etc. I am thinking to myself "ok show it to me since you like to talk about it so much" I know through much research that this park was once where they held agricultural fairs in the early to mid 1800's and then in the late 1880's it was a horse race track. So the possibility is truly there of him making such a find. I just can't figure out why he is having such trouble remembering exactly what he found.

The next words out of his mouth? lol "There is nothing at this field it has been wiped clean" LOL I thought to myself, "of course there isn't. I only pulled an 1894 barber dime, an 1825 large cent ( my bro actually found it) wheat cents, buttons, rings etc." and today .......I found my first silver quarter ( 1938 ) at the farm with my GT!!! My Super Dimeman status has been upgraded lol

Beachbat, I am now changing my status to quarterman lol

Thanks for looking - Jim aka quarterman

I like that even better ism - Q-Man lol
how you doing with the carnival spot in your area?

Jim - aka Q-Man :)

Jim , finnally a quarter and its funny you found it on a farm , and not the carnival site, thats good really good , now you are spoiled, I,m shure you will find more of them , next time you see that guy tell him man you are right this place is cleaned out , but Its got some nice pull tabs I collect

Hi gunnar,

I worked a hard two hours for this quarter lol Moving this small 800 coil ever so slowly through the junk did the trick. This place is just junk items like on your farm - tons of nails, farm / barn / wagon / pieces of old mill saws, houseware stuff - just a big old dump of a site. You know how it feels to try to sift through it all - but that is where this little tornado coil makes a difference.

I am hoping to spend a good amount of time on the carnival site this coming weekend.

The guy doesn't detect anymore. Basically what he was telling me is that he was really looking for the steel pegs in the ground for the park ( setting up seating) and decided to detect the park one day and found these above item by chance. This had to of been years back as it looks like he has a hard time just walking --never mind bending down to dig and pick up a coin.

Thank you BBH-

Well this groundskeeper "bob" thinks because he ran over it once with his detector that the area has been thoroughly cleansed. The sad but funny thing is that he truly believes it. That is quite ok with me as it leaves more stuff for me to find. :) HH - Jim

Congratulations Jim, it was well overdue that you got that 'monkey off your back', you will probably find a whole bunch of them now........

I think he must be related to a detectorist near me!

Hi Beachbat,
lol I am glad the monkey is gone. Hopefully you are right and I do find more quarters.... Yes, I remember your situation with the "ten mile" beach cleaner dude lol I do believe groundskeeper bob and "ten mile" beach comber should get together and tell stories. How are things in your "neck of the woods"? - Jim aka Q-man

I went out again the other day and only found a couple deep wheat pennies, not to mention the shotgun brass. So I decided to hunt a park my daughter told me about. I dug six deep wheats, lots of clad but no silver coins.
Oh yeah...I did have some "earthly POT luck?"....I found a one hitter pipe somebody lost.

Next day, I decided to run my Vaquero for shallow jewelry hunting on the sports field. After digging a lot of trash, I ran the disc up to coins only as I was working my way out of the park. First coin was shallow a merc dime. It got me energized but only dug clad after that freak incident. I will go back and hit that park some more also.

I knew that you would find a silver quarter pretty soon... you are just too determined to clean out those fine sites you are working!!!
Congradulations and hope you find more of them!!

Hi ism,
I like finding wheat cents. It tells me that there is more there if those are found. Almost like a "lot test" = if I can go on a lot and pull a few wheats out - there IS going to be more that comes out of the place. (It hasn't failed me yet...lol) And look at that- a place a family member told you to hunt and you found some nice wheat cents! See, my brother tells me about places I never been..... then I go with him once or twice then he gives up because he doesn't find anything right off the bat.... but I keep going back,(perform research in between and realize what the area use to be) he then sees what I am finding (wheats, silver dimes, relics) and now he gets upset because I am cleaning all the goodies off the lot :) moral of the story - if you found those deep wheats, don't give up on the place - keep hammering it until it bleeds lol - there is more there then those wheat cents - guaranteed!

Well, if you found a "hitter" that would definitely translate into earthly POT luck lol

nice find on the Merc! And you know if you found one....

The picture below is from two days ago - boy was my brother upset when I e-mailed him the pics! This is the carnival place that he introduced me to. Since I changed over to the small tornado 800 coil - I pulled out 8 silver dimes and a boat load of wheat pennies. Also found TONS of clad as they still use the multiple acre field for carnivals to this day. On top of it being used for carnivals, the school nearby uses it for gym classes and recess! It is a place that will never run out of coins. HH - Jim aka Q-man

Thank you Felix for your kind words. Determination is coming to an end ( getting colder and I have other things I need to take care of in life) I tell ya, this year has been phenomenal for me - two large cents (1822 & 1841), 44 silver dimes, 222 wheat pennies, 6 IH pennies, 5 Buffalo nickels, 3 V-nickels and many neat buttons and misc relics. I can't even imagine how much I have in clad lol For right now I am just collecting it in a 5 gallon container. The majority of the silver and wheats came out of parks that were "beaten to death" over the years by other detectorists. So it just goes to show no park is truly ever hunted out... I do want to say that I invested many hours this summer treasure hunting (my first season with the GT) and it was all well spent. I learned a lot out in the field and right here on this forum. Thanks to many here (including yourself) you helped a newbie with his sovereign GT and I truly appreciate it.

I hope you can hit some of the fine parks in your area now that the weather is getting cooler for you and look forward to seeing some of your "goodies" Take care & HH - Jim
