another question Checking Ground balance

George W

New member
Please excuse me if I posted this or something like it as I'm on a laptop with a wireless connection. I just checked and don't see my post so maybe it never made it!
Is there a way to check my ground balance on the MXT? On my DFX I just bring the coil to wast level and pull the trigger and then bring the coil to the ground and if there's little to no change in my threshold I know it's balanced OK.. The wife and I was at a salt water beach and I tried to check her MXT the same way but when I raised the coil to wast level and lowered it to the ground it sounds like I hit a target like when pinpointing.. What's up with this? I tried with the unit set to salt set to ground and set to track still the unit sees the ground as a target.. I know I must be missing something but can some of you explain it to me.. Is there a way to check the Ground balance of a MXT? My wife and I found .11 in tree day's there!! LOL!!! George

This is for the MXT. After ground balancing, hold the loop at waist level, pull the pinpoint trigger and hold it while lowering the coil to the ground. The threshold should remain steady with a little increase in volume. If not then you need to ground balance again. Make sure the spot is clean.

Tin Nugget,
Thanks! seems I did that and I still get a large increase in audio when lowering the coil to the ground.. I also made sure to ground balance over clean ground.. So I'm not sure what's going on.. On my DFX this is the method I always use. I got from Jeff's DD with the DFX book.. Thinking it should also hold true to the MXT but I must be missing somthing when doing it on my wifes MXT.. George

I sort of have the same issue sometimes. I have found it depends on where I am. I hunt and old park in town. When I ground balance anywhere in the park it is nice and steady with barely an increase. I can walk across the foot bridge over the creek right next to the park where there are soccer and softball fields and when I ground balance anywhere there, there is a larger increase in volume when I check the ground balance. Don't know why. May have something to do with whatever they treat the grass with? I have also noticed when I check the ground balance, the higher I have the threshold set the rise in volume has a wider gap. I think the main thing is that it remains smooth with no break up.

OK, I do thank you for the reply! I was at a salt water beach I'll have to try it other places.. If I was smart I would just let the wife do her thing and try and learn the unit.. I seem to be throwing a wrench in the works, when ever I try the unit it don't do something I expect it to do and I go on my rant how somethings not right.. I think i just don't know the MXT well enough.. I sure don't want to deter my wife's detecting interests unintentionally with my dumb a_s comants and expectations about the MXT. I should keep my mouth shut till I know the unit I guess! I tend to be anal about things working right.. Thanks for your help! George

Not really George. The DFX has a manual Ground Balance with automatic tracking, optional. The MXT is automatic ground Balance, (bobbing), with fast track. You shouldn't have to worry about the GB on the MXT. If ground conditions change, the MXT will keep up with the changes. I think you are right on with your earlier post about leaving the wife's toy alone. I don't mess with Nancy's MXT.......she doesn't mess with my DFX. Two different animals and they don't play well together. But very competitive.

Larry,
Thanks for explaining the ground tracking on both units.. That helps! Maybe I should be a closet reader of MXT Edge BOOK!! Ya I think with the metal detecting and have two different units I am best leaving my comments and my hands off my wife's MXT I seen to be doing more harm then good and not the thing to do at least till she's really hooked on the hobby. Even then if I use it I should just learn it for my self! I see now I'm learning more then just detecting LOL!!! Thanks! George

Did I alread send you this link? I don't remember.
