I haven't found a way around that yet. The only good thing is you get rid of all those pieces of metal and can hunt thru again.

If you are specifically coin hunting, then sometimes "sizing" the target in pinpoint mode can help (looking for "coin-sized" targets), assuming the roofing pieces are generally "larger-sized." If they are small though, or if you are hunting a variety of targets, not much you can do as far as I know (as others have said).
