Another pinpointing question

I've been reading posts from other users and I'm a bit confused; looking for some clarity.
When you're pinpointing with the explorer xs, and you find the spot where the beep is the loudest.... (and you know you're over the target and not trash) Under the coil, where exactly is the target? The center of the coil? The tip of the coil, farthest from you? or the rear, closest to you?
I have been thinking the target would be right below the center of the coil; there's a little plastic bump from the molding and thats the point I've been using to dig. The only problem is, I end up digging these 6 inch wide holes and the target doesnt seem to show up where I thought it was. (though I dont really know for sure, it just seems that way)

On the coil is a label that says "Minelab Explorer."
What I do is when I find a target I go left and right with the coil over that target then I walk 90 degrees to the left or right of the target and swing over the target again. This gives you gives you a good indication where it is.
Then I hit the pinpoint button and slows slide the tip of the coil toward that target. It will get loudest when the part of the coil that is directly below the label is directly above the target.
So in a nutshell:
1) Find target.
2) hit the pinpoint button
3) push coil toward the target.
4) when sound is loudest you are directly over the target.
At this point I slowly lift the coil away from the target area and while keeping my eye on the target area I push my trowell right in the spot that was under the label.
Sometimes I will, after finding the target, hit pinpoint and swing the coil over the target until I get the loudest beep while watching the ground for when it beeps the loudest.
Is this too much information?
Of course I am not by any means a well seasoned detectorist and am still learning. But at least I do know how to pinpoing!

Yeah that answers my question. I have another detector, a garrett that I have been using for a few years. I used the same principal you mentioned when I used the pinpointing function of that detector. The thing I wanted to know was what part of the detector I should use to decide where to dig when the sound is the loudest. You answered that question, thanks. I just hope they put the sticker in the same place on my detector

Jeremy,
You do know the coil is a double D coil so when you get a signal it will be anywhere from the tip of the coil the the heal of it, so what most do is wiggle the coil side to side a little while bringing the coil back to you, when the signal is gone go back forward untill you hear it again, not the target is on the tip of the coil and where you normaly will find it is back a little from the tip and under the Minelab label. If it is a deeper signal than I will go side to side and center the signal, push the coil to the ground and turn 90 degrees and go side to side again and center the target, now the target will be under the very center of the coil like the Garrett is. Once you have done it a few times it is very easy to do and will get right on. Just got to remember this detector is differnt than the Garrett is.
Good Luck
Rick

Wheh I get a signal I just hit the pinpoint button and its just like a normal detector, the target will usually be right under the dot in the center of the coil.
