Another Option To The Sunray Probe

I have used a few probes and none compare with the Sun-Ray inline probe. You can press pin-point and zero right in to the target. For my style of hunting it works for me. And by the way Critter I thought you used a screwdriver. The last time I used a screwdriver I forgot about having it in my back pocket and did considerable damage to my trucks upholstery. It all comes down to what works for you. At least we can all somewhat agree on :minelab: HH

Most of the time I'll use a screwdriver if the target is say less than 4" or so, but if I suspect it's an old coin I'll dig the plug just to be safe. Even on shallow targets I'll break out the pin pointer just to laser in on where I need to pop the target. Super tuning it comes in handy for that when it's just out of reach of the pin pointer, but still shallow enough to pop out with a screw driver.

You should get one of those ultility pouches from Home Depot (posted a pic a while back). Carries my digger, screwdriver, and Pro Pointer on my left hip, along with my target ID chart in case I want to reference it. This thing also has made my hunts much more stream lined. I used to carry my digger and screwdriver in my trash apron and having it fall out on me or poke me in the stomach when bending down was a major hassle. A friend liked it so much he also picked up one of these $6 jobs. If you don't want to wear a belt it has a section on the back meant to stick into your pocket to hold it, but I prefer using a utility belt. The one thing I did was cut holes in it so the screwdriver and probe would sit further down into it as otherwise the thing gets top heavy and will shift sideways some times.

Another thing I noticed with the ProPointer is that the volume had got fairly low over the last few hunts. That's probably a good way to tell if the battery alarm is only a few hours off. I've considered throwing a lipo 9V cell into it for increased run time (probably a few years) but don't know what the cut off voltage is for the probe on a 2 cell (think these lipo 9V are two cells). If they are then it would have to sound the alarm before the lipo hits 6V to avoid damage. One of these should also be a good bit lighter than a regular 9V. Think I may do a quick search on them and will post what I find.

A while back I heard that somebody was "extra" super tuning the unit by turning it on pointed a certain distance away from their coil. The magnetic field generated by the coil must do something to the calibration on power up. I would figure even if that works it would be machine specific, and I don't remember hearing what kind of detector was being used. I may play with that in the field. It would be a little less hassle than grabbing the washer with my thumb to tune it the "normal" way.

Here's a link to one. It appears it has an internal cut off when the battery gets below 6.4V to protect the cells againt over discharge. Nifty little way to avoid damage and yet be able to use in any device. I didn't look much but I think a few other links have this battery at like $7. Half the weight and two or three times the run time.

I find the depth is real good and you have a disc probe where the others you dont. I find this handy on the iffy signal as I can get close to the target in all metal pinpoint then when I get a bit of a signal I can switch to disc and see if the target is good or not.
There is one probe that seems to go deeper and that is the Uni-Probe with the headphones built it and easy to use too, I have one I use for any detector I dont have a Sun Ray for, but a bit pricey
