Another old site...Another bust

I just do not get it...We go to these old sites in my area, and all we find is junk and clad...I know our machines are more than capable of finding the goods, but It just never happens...I use the Discovery 3300 with 8 and 10 inch coils, and my buddy uses an XLT with 9.5 and 5.3 coils...I find pennies at 8-10 inches on a regular basis, so if Silver was there, I know I could hit it...It just makes me want to bang my head against a wall...for about 2 hours, this is my haul for the day...

I did manage to find this Chineese Coin...Not sure how to get the crud off it other than electrolosis, and I am not a big fan of that...It appears to be brass...

Can anyone tell me what it is and if it is real???

HH,

How much Wheat do you dig?

I believe it is called a Chinese Cash coin, and it is most likely real. I'm not having much luck finding silver any more either. I have hammered all the places I have found silver in the past. I gained permission for several new sites, that I felt had potential, and I think I do a good job of thinking outside the box at all my sites, but nothing. Don't get discouraged. Things will pick up soon.

Your Chinese cash coin looks to be one of the emperor Tao Kuang, and likely dates from 1821-50. You would think that if you could find a coin that old at this location, there would be others to be found as well. As far as crud removal is concerned, I'd start with distilled water soaks and scrubbing with a toothbrush. If that fails, a brass wire brush would probably be more effective. To be sure, though, electrolysis would be overkill.

I beleive you are right Sir...Wonder what that was doing at only 3 inches in a site that was an old amusement park???

HH,

Again I ask; How many Wheas do you dig? They are an indicator.

I dig no wheats....Cannot even find them around here...
Prolly why there are very few detectorists in my area...I think the place got hunted out in the 60s and 70s

You are digging clad in the 8 to 10 inch range. Stuff sinks fast.

I doubt any site is truly hunted out. What you need is some more tricks and new sites.

Get in where others will not go. Down close to that big ol sticker bush. Bigger coils for depth or Smaller coils for trash. Go with someone who may have different machines than you and get a feel for how they react to your sites. Get off the beaten path. Next to tree roots. Dig some trash signals to de sure it is trash.

You may need more depth, and that might mean a new coil or a new machine.
If the wife complains about the money involved, just, very non chelantly, say to her; Ya know dear, I was thinking about selling the metal detecting gear and taking up golf. Then I could play with your dad and brother and the guys at work.. Worked for me, but my wife knows how much $$$ her dad and brother spend on the game. I kid you not. Of course this is my only hobby and she is supportive of me in this hobby, that helps.

I am not sure which machines have the biggest punch. The top Fisher and Teknetics seem to do well, as do a couple of the Garretts. I am not sure where the Whites machines stand but folks seem to do ok with them. From there the Safari, Explorer, Etrack and Soverign from Minelab hit deep (deep) and have excelent trash seperation.

Then you have the PI machines. Dig clean to China.

I have kicked myself for not getting one of the Troy machines that were for sale lately. Word is they hit real deep. Expecially the X5.

If you still have your Bounty Hunters and they were one of their better offerings you may try to find a 11" DD coil from a Fisher or a Teknetics IF it will fit. That coil does fit on some BH machines, or even an after market coil for a Fisher may fit your BH. There are also bigger coils for the Whites machines I think.

What are your ground conditions like; Out west we have some areas of highly minerelized ground. That may effect coil choice.
At least this is the advice some have given to me and others. Read other forums for tips and tricks and reviews of other machines. Research.

hi go go. your're in a very old area, and it sounds like some dirt has been moved and trucked around quite a bit - it happens a lot more than we know about. i've read your posts for years, as you have mine, so i know it's not you or your choice of machines. you would think living in the petersburg area of virginia that i would be digging civil war relics and colonial coins with every sweep, but i don't! the only thing that seems to ensure good finds on a regular basis is the large number of different and varying types of places that i go to. some spots suck, some spots are ok, and some spots are phenomenal!

simply put, the more different areas you have, the more and varied the finds will be. topographical maps and going online to your state's historical society will reveal a lot about your area - you just never know until you check it out. good luck, and hh!

GoGo-

Great find on that Chinese coin. Funny, looks you found the same coin as I did 2 wks ago. I thought it was a rusty token or washer. I've loaned out my Land Star and have been using a new Safari for three months and posted on the Minelab Quattro-Safari forum. .

2 wks ago I did find my oldest coin - a chinese coin from the Emperor HSUAN TSUNG AD 1821-1850 era. S-1512, "BOO CIOWAN" (Board of Revenue mint). The Manchu mint name translates to Pao-Ch'uan, or "The Fountain head of the Currency". Unfortunately there are not individual years, so I can't tell what year specifically it was minted.. I thought it was a rusty washer. It doesn't look as good as these attachments...

"cause down the shore everything's all right"

I have tended to hunt public places, but Now that I have a few friends to hunt with, we are starting to hunt private properties and wooded areas...Maybe my luck will change...It is definitely getting better...:clapping:
That Chineese coin is worth between 8 and 15 dollors...I figure 8 with the knicks in the face.
