Another noise question from a Newby

I have my new Exp II for about a month. Been playing around with it while the snow falls up here in N.Y. State. (waiting for the stuff to melt so I can use it) If the detector has 28 freq to work with and I am adjusting the noise channels manually, am I changing the freqs when I go from channel to channel? Will the company give the freq information to the owners of what channel is for what combination or combinations of freqs for the 1-11 man. channels individually ? Another Question; Are these 28 seperate freqs or are they harmonics of other freqs ?
I would appreciate some opinions on these questions. Thanks Fred D.

1). Yes, all 28 freqs shift slightly in an attempt to find a "channel" where the receiver is experiencing the least noise.
2). No, not that I've seen other than some advertisements list "Multiple Frequencies (1.5, 3, 4.5....100kHz)" as frequencies suggesting the answer to 3). is at least partially yes.
So, all 28 frequencies are active at any one time, but the entire group shifts up or down from the factory setting of 5 depending on which channel you or the software decides interferes the least with the recieve circuits. Since it is a motion detector, they caution you to keep the coil immobile while scanning channels so any target influences don't get registered as "noise" which would mark a possibly clear channel as "bad".
I hope this helps, and one of these days I'll break out my oscilloscope and give some hard numbers to these discussions because this is a topic that constantly comes up. Unless you are designing a coil, the absolute value of the frequencies should be immaterial since we are detecting objects in the ground as opposed to reverse engineering the Minelab design.

Thank you Varmint for your answer.I understand the concept. Another reason for my asking the range of freqs is that I am curious why this detector is not as sensitive to gold prospecting use as the other "gold prospecting"detectors that share the same spectrum as the Ex II. The exp II is a much more sophisticated unit that uses the same freqs that are used for gold prospecting. Too bad you cannot specify what freqs you would like to use for a particular purpose.
No, I am not designing another coil (At this time) even though it is really tempting being a retired electronic R&D engineer. But first I have to learn to use my new "gadget". Maybe the snow will end soon so I can try it out. Thanks Again Fred D.

If the weather ever starts to let up I'm in the W.N.Y area and would like to hunt with sombody somday.
I mostly go by my self amd have allday as I work Second shift. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

Explorer is advertised as a coin and relic unit and does very well in this aspect.Even with no electronic background I understand what you are talking about to a degree...Honestly if I was a gold nugget hunter would buy a good gold nugget detector and Minelab does manufacture them.

Pulltabby Thanks for the invite. Right now Im in the midst of building a house, living with my daughter in Cobleskill, and a total newby with this gadget. Will definitly get back to you in the spring and probably braindrain you and your experience with this Ex II. Thanks again Fred D.

I will be checking out this EXII (hopefully) on gold prospecting if I can convince my wife that a trip to Alaska or No. Georgia is in order this summer. If it does not work out, then I'll consider a Gold detector. Thanks for the input> Fred D.
