Another newbie checking in

I received an ACE 250 for Christmas and am looking forward to learning about the hobby. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard! Your 250 is a very capable detector but metal detecting has a bit of a learning curve. Just remember your detector is capable of finding great stuff but it is up to you to learn how to use it.

I have made incredible finds with my Ace 250. It's a coin-monster..you'll love it once you dial yourself in. Good luck !

Forget about setting it to all metal like the dvd says. Stick it in coin mode, 4 bars of sensitivity, dig every beep. This is the best setting for a newbie. After you get the hang of it you can gradually use less discrimination and increased sensitivity.

1) Always wear headphones!! Extends battery life and makes you less annoying to others around you and you'll get those targets non-phone wearers miss.
2) Drop your Sensitivity down to 4 bars. 250 will run much more stable. Once you feel confident, (maybe 100 hrs.) ramp it up and see how it acts.
2A) Run in Coins mode for that 1st 100 hours and get comfortable with your new tool. The Coins mode will still get you silver rings and some gold ones if they get under your coil.
3) Make the first wrap of your coil wire as it comes off the coil go over the shaft.
4) Make sure you coil cable is not flopping around. Your coil will pick it up and give you false signals. Do not get it so tight as to strain the cable at either end. I use Velcro cable ties or Mighty Tape (non-sticky)
5) Don't take a shovel with you!!! Use a good quality digger and make your holes as small and neat as possible. You are now an emissary of the hobby, respect is paramount!!
6) Have fun!!

Welcome to thwe hobby BAMA. ( ...uhhhh...that's not O - BABA is it?). As someone pointed out, the 250 is a coin monster. I bought mine last March and found over 3000 coins last summer, so enjoy and get a good camera so you can post pics of your finds. Oh yeah - give a big hug to whoever gave it to you, cause you're gonna have some fun now!

Thanks for all the tips. My wife gave it to me after I had given her a couple of choices when she asked me what I wanted for Christmas (I had been wanting one for a long time). She also got the headphones and storage bag.

No O in BAMA, I chose that as that's where I'm from and the 57 is the year of an old car I'm restoring.
