my screens have rainbow streaks thru them

so anyway can someone check there display screens please and thank-you

this does not seem correct but then maybe its is
any help would be great
thanks

Andrew,
I have had the same rainbow thing happen to me a couple of times. With the naked eye (no sunglasses) and both times it was late in the day with the sun a little past the tree line. Has had no affect on the Pro in performance. I didn't bother calling Garrett to ask why. Maybe someone on the forum knows why. Just letting you know that your Pro does not stand alone with the rainbow issue and may not even be an issue

Hope this may have helped a little, Chuck

You have polorized sunglasses. I've seen the same thing on other brands with visual screens.

Agree, it's a sunglass thing....not an AT Pro thing. My sunglasses have the same effect and they do it on other screens too.

I have noticed as Chuck mentioned, that late afternoon, no sunglasses, low light conditions, there was some streaking.
The fishfinder/depth indicator on my skiff does the same thing. Having said that, as good as my AT is working, I sure
wouldn't send it in for that.

Not a problem Andrew, both my A T Pros have the rainbow effect when strong sunlight catches the screen,

I would imagine all the A T screens react the same way.

Polorized sunglasses will do that with almost any LCD screen. My glasses make any LCD hard to read at certain angles, displays like watches and gas pumps and car radios.

JC

Polarized glasses do that to a lot pf screens. You can not use them flying a air plain because of this affect on instruments.

looked at the screen on the Pro. I see what the talk is about with the sunglasses. What rainbow effect that I saw was no way near as drastic as with the sunglasses. But what I saw was obvious and I feel it was pretty much caused by the way the sunlight was hitting the screen. Like I stated, the only couple of times that I have noticed the rainbow screen colors are late in the afternoon. Everyone is wright. I just never saw the rainbow effect through sunglasses. It is great to have these forums to learn and understand things regarding this great hobby.

Thanks, Chuck

Yep, it does it on mine. Sometimes I can see the "rainbow" effect even without the sunglasses.

Nope, sunglasses don't seem to bother my other MD's.

Oh well, just one more "insignificant" issue not to worry about.

You have what is called double polarized light. Most LCD screens have polarized lens to reduce glare and when viewed through another polarized lens you get quite a light show. Some cars have side windows polarized and most all newer boat windshields are polarized too. It kind of takes you back to the 70's..........

Try watching something through two window screens close together in certain sunlight and you will see the same thing. It is light diffraction and nothing to do with the At Pro.

Jerry

Just wondering, do any of you guys have another MD model or brand that has the "rainbow" effect on the screen?

I can see it on mine even without sunglasses on, when the sun is out and fairly bright.

I have seen this phenomenon in other cases as many have mentioned above, but not on other MD's I've used.

I have a shortwave radio and the LCD display on that has to be kept out of bright sunlight or it is nearly unreadable. It gets very dark. Set it in the shade for a few minutes and it returns to normal. I think that to some degree it is the nature of the beast with LCD displays. About the only thing I have seen that works well in bright sunlight and is readable is the Kindle ebook reader. I doubt if that technology is viable for a metal detector because it is pretty slow.

I have learned that on my machine the rainbow effect appearing on the screen was actually being caused by moisture accumulating under the screen leaving streaks when evaporating.

If noticed, keep watching it, mine developed that problem about 4 weeks before I could actually see water inside the screen.

It's headed to the shop.

Too bad Garrett wouldn't step up and address this issue. My money is on they won't.

Yes I have seen the "rainbow" look on two AT Pros neither of which have ever seen a drop of moisture, and you don't need any sunglasses to see it, just angle it around a bit in sunlight, and you'll see it. I just called garrett about this, got the sunglasses story, I told them "no sunglasses" then phone tag, ended up with someone who "was not in"

No I have not seen this effect on other machines with LCD screens. (although some have an awful glare at certain angles, which is probably worse)

Maybe applying a clear protective layer of something over the screen will eliminate this ?? which is not a bad idea anyway on these type of screens to keep them from getting scratched. A friend uses a 3M product on his detectors (and cell phone) I'll find out what it is, and if it may help.
