Another new Ace owner from downunder......

werewolf

New member
Greetings from Wollongong, NSW.

I normally swing a Tesoro Cibola, which I love dearly. After lurking here for a while and reading posts from my fellow Aussies Mick in Dubbo & LazyAussie, I decided to get an Ace 250 as a back up. Was also lucky enough to find the 9 by 12 coil on eBay for $70.

Only had the machine for 2 days and WOW I'm impressed! This thing is an absolute killer on coins. As good as (or even better than) my Cibola! Two quick beach hunts have yielded over $20 in shrapnel and a couple of rings, and I love that full rounded tone when the coil strikes the 'goldies'! The Ace tone seems quite distinct on coins, so much so that I find myself rarely using the ID screen.

It's hot as hell here at the moment, and the ground is rock hard. I'll be hitting the parks as soon as we get some heavy rain. Unfortunately most of the tot lots here in the Ilawarra have done away with pinebark, the majority having that imitation grass mating.

I'm an Ace 250 convert!!!!!!!!

yeah g"day werewolf another aussie here (melbourne) welcome im new here as well i also have the ace 250 with the bigger coil i did pretty well on my first two outings not so well at the beach i think i will stick to the local parks so happy hunting thanks MM

welcome to the dark side werewolf :starwars: may the force of the ACE side be with you  the ACE is a great little detector witch loves those $2 nuggets  & gives you all the ID info ya need to decide weather to dig or not. dont forget to post all the great finds ya make.
monoman the beach gets hit pretty hard in Melbourne i"d run the ACE with sensitivity on max in the dry sand to try & get the deep stuff the others miss.

Welcome aboard .:garrett:
Post when you can. Will send you some of our snow and cold that'll cool things down:laugh:

Thanks for the replies folks, nice to meet you all!

I'll be sure to post pics when I find that cache of holey dollars:)

I gave the 9 by 12 a first work out on Port Kembla beach last nite, with a result of $10.30 - not bad for 90 minutes. Was hoping to find more but a southerly had come thru' the night before and covered the main beach in a extra foot of sand. The new coil makes beach work SO easy, and is smooth as butter.

The highlight of the nite was helping a panicked family find the key to their car's steering lock. Having never been asked for help before whilst detecting, I was dubious of finding something so small over a broad area. No problems - the Ace found it within a few minutes:super:

Welcome to the group:detecting:

G'day werewolf and I hope you enjoy Australia Day!:ausflag:
What a great part of the world you live in! Apart from the steel works, Wollongong would have to be one of the prettiest locations with some of the most ideal weather conditions in the country. Not to mention that you have Sydney just down the road which not only offers a wide variety of work, but also attracts plenty of beach goes to your fair part of the world! (= more finds.)
Having used the Cibola has put you in good stead for using the Ace as you've learned the value of an audio system. You'll do well with the Ace and it loves our gold coins! Both the $1 and $2 coins almost always lock onto notch 8. Screw caps do too, but you can tell them apart by listening to how long the pinpoint audio fades as you slide the coil back towards yourself. It's not a perfect method, but pretty good. I've only played around with one Tesoro before. It was a Silver U-max. I had a lot of trouble figuring out the audio responses, but did note that when you raised the coil to listen to how the signal broke off, our gold coins broke off in a very different manner to screw caps.
If you are interested, I wrote an article about the Ace, that is in the January edition of the Gold Gem and Treasure mag. I wrote it to give tips on using the Ace. It may be of some help to you.
Good luck with the new toy and post you finds.
Mick Evans.
BTW. My older brother has been tied up with the Surf Lifesaving club at Thirroul with all of his family for quite a few years. I don't know if he is still active in the club now as his kids have grown up and he lives in the Blue Mountains but he still does a lot of swimming.

Welcome aboard bud. You got a real goodie getter there in that 250 and it should reward you well. Hope you return and post some pics. Good luck.

Bill

Thanks all!

Mick - yup I saw your article in GGT mag and it helped me decide on the Ace. You've done very well with it. I was up your way earlier this month on a visit to the zoo. Looks like you have lots of old places to hunt in Dubbo, Orange, Mudgee etc. Most of the old spots here in the Gong have been demolished and covered in layers of coalwash and industrial slag. Add a 4 inch layer of kikuyu on top of that and it makes for tough diggin'! Very hard to find pre decimals.

Re the Tesoro - it took me a good month to understand it's language - but now I hear what its saying! Made learning the Ace all the more easier!

Cool.
I live on the same side of the river as the Zoo. only a a couple of blocks from the main bridge. You wouldn't have seen too many animals out unless you went really early as they try and stay out of the heat.
I spent the week-end camped over on the Sydney side of Mudgee, beside the dam. only about 3kms(as the crow flys) from Monero creek, which was a very rich spot for gold back in the gold rush days. There was a reasonable amount of quartz and some ironstone around as well. (a good indicator of gold) Didn't have a detector with me though as it would have got damaged by the heat. I would have needed to leave it in the car. Had other priorities anyway.
You are very fortunate to be living where you are. If you ever run out of spots in the Illawarra, then you can always head north for some very juicy spots. Saw some good one on the news tonight where everybody was celebrating Australia day.
Anyway, enjoy your Ace. I'm sure that you'll be imparting some good insights in the near future.
Mick Evans.
