Another Masonic Coin

I was curious about these coins. What meaning do they hold? What was the purpose of this coin?

Here's what I was told by the leader of the Royal Arch Masons:

The coin was given to a mason when he achieved a significant level within the order, usually the first level in the RAM. At that time, he was to create his "mason mark" which is recorded in the book and he was to scratch his mark upon the coin within the circle of the "keystone". Therefore, if the coin was lost/found, the mark could be identified and the coin returned. The coins were pretty significant to the owner and I'm sure if they wouldn't want to loose one.

This coin (pictured below) belonged to my grandfather. It was found in my backyard at a house I once owned, my grandparents house, after they had passed. Well, no mark, he didn't scratch his mark (He was lazy anyway......)

The day is not a total loss, you learned something!

Very interesting, thanks for the information. I had thought about taking mine to one of the lodges to get some info. I wish mine had the date on it!!

Will have to check out the one I have. Looks like yours and can't recall any marking inside the circle. Thanks for the info on it.

Thanks for the information, GA DIGGER. My Mason penny also doesn't have any scratches in the center of it. It's actually in great shape, so I am slowly trying to remove the muck from it without causing any damage. Take care. Johnny
