Another Large Copper Saved :)

Well I went back to the old school I had found the last large penny and indians and barber at and got lucky and found another large penny. But it's pretty bad off! Some would say feel lucky that I found one but on the other hand I enjoy looking at old coins and just hate to see them in this condition! But that's part of it! Anyway I'm trying to clean it up with a little peroxide so we will see.

If you look at the back of the coin all the edges of all the letters are raised! Even the stars on the front are like that! I know you can't tell from that picture but looking at the coin here that's the way they appear. Weird!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any Ideas why??

Mike if you mean that the detail on the back of the coin is like a stencil I have found copper coins like that. It occurred from the raised detail corroding away leaving the detail preserved in reverse only through the surface corrosion etc remaining. What detail is left will be lost if you clean the coin if yours is the same circumstance as what I found.

Way to go Mike!
Keep it up!

Not too sure why ??? but I have had Coppers do the same thing...My guess is that the fertilized ground is a bit more worst in some areas than others.

nice find! The soil really hammers these coins and any fertilizer added to the mix - compounds the damage. Still it's an old coin!
Was probably face up. Good luck!
