Another hot rock question

Hey all. I read the old posts concerning hot rocks that I could find. But am still somewhat confused. My question is CAN a "hot rock" VDI actually be a good target?

Or is it just that a hot rock can mask a good target nearby?

I dont see many hot rocks myself, but do see one once in a while. For me they hit 95 on the meter which is too high for a coin. I have had some negitive one, but they will null.
I too was curiuos if anyone found hot rocks that read like a coin.
Rick

I have found a couple of hot rocks that indicated as a coin.
Has anyone ever found a coin that was indicated as a hot rock? I usually don't dig hot rocks so I really don't know.

I usually don't have alot of time so I skip the hot rock signals. Almost all other iffy positive #'s I'll check out. I just have no clue about hot rocks.

if the MXT tracks them out? I know that would be a pain if there are a lot of them where you hunt but it would be a good way to check them out.

But good targets get tracked out too if you you spend to much time making passes over them. Correct?
I'm going to search the old posts again and reread them. And next time out spend a little more time checking out some hot rock signals.

get tracked out, not all of them anyway. If you hover over a very deep weak target it will somtimes track out but any metal object that triggers the VDI turns off the tracking. I have never used the MXT in the desert but the guys that do say it will track out most hot rocks.
The definition of a hot rock is any rock with mineralization that is sufficiently different from the surrounding soil matrix to cause a signal on the detector. There will be some very positive hot rocks that may not track out. Fortunately for most of us we have it made as the majority of those are found in the western gold bearing areas.

Thanks Tom. See I didn't think that auto trac got turned off until you pulled the trigger to pinpoint. Another bit of information to store into the old grey matter.
Been raining here for what seems like weeks although it's really been maybe one. Itching to get back out there but no end in sight yet.
