Another Ground Balancing question...

A

When GBing in a highly mineralized area, would you look for the mellowest soil to ground balance, or would you ground balance over an area with hot rocks and such? It would seem that if you GB over mellow soil, you would be setting yourself up for having a lot of falsing and chatter. If you GB over the harsh soil, then your detector would have a GB too positive and would loose depth (and target masking?). Is that when you would pull out a piece of ferrite and split the difference? I need some guidance on this.
Thanks for the help,
J.

It is possible, but not usually the case that the soil in one general area will change more than in a few places. You may have to check your ground balance once and a while and make an adjustment.
If you have to do this real often, it is most commonly an indication that soil has been moved in from another area at some point in the past.
The best answer is balance it for the soil in the immediate area you are searching and be willing to make the occasional adjustment when necessary.

Check and adjust as necessary, if the ground is fluctuating a great deal.
However, if you are plagued by radical changes in ground mineralization at some site, set the GB over the more typical ground. Not over any specific 'Hot Rock' or what you preceive to be a hot rock.
You are correct that if balanced over mellow ground and then searching in the Disc. mode over very minerlized ground, you could have a too negative GB and experience falsing. However, if you have a proper GB for the more mineralized ground, you will not really suffer much loss in performance if hunting over less mineralized areas.
