Another gold ring for the CTX

nolanation

New member
Found another gold ring and another piece of silver at the school, this ring rang in at 12:42, but "I went to Jared", and to another place and it tested 14k, any ideas why it rang in so high? Weighs 1.5g. Thanks and HH.

I thought I had a ring that ran off about the same I figured it was a plated ring with perhaps copper inside which gave it such a high reading

Nice one! Not sure why it rang so hi. Maybe trash in the hole?

Could it be a plated ring?

Thats what I'm wondering...However, the plated stuff that I have will stick to a magnet, and I wouldn't think that would come in at 12/42 either.

the ring has been acid tested twice, and I took it to the jeweler and let them grind down some of the inside, and it all tested positive for 14k.

Since 14k is only 58% gold the other 42% of the alloy could be copper, silver or other highly conductive metal.

Others could chime in on this but if it was 18K wouldemt it still come up as positive for 14K? Becuase it is my understanding that higher karats ring as higher conductive numbers.

At "1.5g", isn't that a very, very small ring? All gold rings I have found that were that small, all rang in the 12-3 to 9 range. Almost all the 10 and 14K rings I have found that were in the 9-13G weight range all rang in the 28-32 range. A small, size 5.5 ladies 10K white gold plain band, rang up 12-09 in 2 foot of freshwater. A small thin 14K signet ring (5g) with stone rang up 12-28.

This is the smallest gold ring I have found in terms of weight so far. I have seen others on here find 0.5g rings, that rang higher than I would have expected. In this case, I do not believe weight plays a part in the ringing in at such a high CO number, but as others have mentioned, the other % of alloy mixed in that caused it. It was also tested at a higher karat and failed that test. Thanks for all the response, as most of the gold rings I have found come in around the average 12:05-12:30 range, but this one was confusing. I also have a couple pieces of .925 silver charms/pendants that had come in around 12:25, that I do believe is size related.

Yeah, that's a very small ring alright..the picture makes it look like a larger one...I have had really thin gold wire bracelets give a high tone..so maybe that's the deal? most of the little gold rings give me a low foil or high iron signal...full disclosure, I don't swing a CTX 3030, but I do get out and hunt a lot.
