Well, I could not leave well enough alone. I liked the finished product so well on the silver bars, I thought that perhaps I would take the same journey and see where the gold took me. I very carefully separated the karat weights and weighed each piece per troy oz. This collection represents all of the gold jewelry I have, except for rings with significant stones, from my starting date water hunting in Jul.'04.

This batch represents unmarked and highly probable junk. It was all returned to me as junk and only the stud earring was excepted. It was in my junk box, so be careful what you think to be junk. Just because it's not marked does not mean it's junk. It weighed .04 troy oz.

These pieces were not marked, but acid tested at 10K or better. Only melt and assay tells the whole story. All were accepted. The total troy oz. weight was .51 troy oz.

This represents the marked 10K pieces in my collection. There was 1.67 troy oz. in this batch.

I was pretty amazed at what I had amassed here in 14K 5.34 troy oz., definitely most popular.

This is the 18K and the total weight here was 1.62 troy oz.

Survey says, I'm a little light after melt and assay for 5 troy oz. of .999 fine. So, I gather up a little more for the lode. If I had an extra $497.22 laying around, I would have just bought it out, but decided to send in another lode. Yes, I have more!

I gathered up what I felt would put me over the top for the lode.

In this final allotment, there are 2 unmarked fine rings, that acid tested 10K and 5 rings marked 10K. Their total weight was .97 troy oz. They can be seen on the top row of the pic. My calculation on their purity was .404 troy oz. There were 6 rings that were marked 14K and their total weight was .54 troy oz. I had factored them to be .315 pure troy oz. The rings pictured on the middle row are the 14K rings. The ring by itself on the bottom was 18K and was .05 troy oz. and figured it to be .038 pure troy oz.

Survey says, I don't have to break the bank to get me bars! I sent Midwest a cashier's check for $86.94. I like it! According to Midwest's calculations my total .999 troy oz, was 5.433. I used the .433 to offset my costs for refining and plan to keep the gold as an investment, as it were. I plan to buy that .433 back on a later lode, when I have a little more expendable income.

When it comes down to it, you never really know what you have until it's refined. I hated to sell when gold has had steady gains like it has lately. I can now input 5 troy oz. X 24K and immediately get my spot value. I like it! The packages are kinda ghetto, but I know this keeps eveything authentic and keeps the bars nice too. I know some of you have way more loot, especially you who do not post, for reasons of secrecy and I respect that decision. It has taken me a long time to amass even this small collection. Mucho travaho! So when I speak of the bar, you know what I am referring to.

Well Bobbie, after filling a Country Crock butter bowl full. I took them to a non-precious metal recycling facility to retrieve my booty. I placed them on the scale and it said over 30 LBs. I said, OK how much do I get? They said $5. I said, no bueno! I now save all non-precious metal that I find and donate them to some black guys that come by our business and haul off scrap metal. I wait until I have a Floger's coffee can full (large plastic one). They get all copper, brass, lead, stainless steel and some aluminum proceeds from my lode. They fish too, but I betcha they'll never have to buy another fishing sinker! GH

I intend to put a pic up soon of rings still in the collection with stones. Everyone is impressed with real ice, but the fact-of-the-matter is, they ain't worth much, unless you get large ones. I offered to sell them to a jeweler (small ones) and they turned their nose up at them, like they were CZs. I removed some of them, but let a few go into the melt, that were very tiny. I am looking for larger ones in future targets to use in a pirate ring or possibly a birthstone ring or possibly both (pirates gotta have bling too right?). I would recommend that you have a professional jeweler remove them for you. This can be accomplished at a reasonable cost. VA Beach Mike probably has the wisest idea I've seen for rings with stones. He actually sells them as a unit for a fair price. People will pay more than the scrap is worth simply because they have bling in them. If you wanted to you could simply reinvest in the gold bars with the proceeds of selling the rings with stones. GH

Actually GeRo, according to Midwest I sent in 10.767 Troy OZ, if you calculate both inbound invoices, weight recieved. Keep in mind that 10K is only 41.7% pure at best. 14K is only 58.5% at best and 18K is only 75% pure at best. The rest of what you have is slag. Copper or whatever. Only the .999 fine is what really matters and it is disguised by these other metals that are mixed in for hardness. Troy OZs contained is the pure gold content of my pieces. The way I see it, I only lost .433 troy ozs. I intend to buy that back on a later lode, to fill another oz. You don't think I'm really going to leave almost a 1/2 oz on the table do ya? I simply let them have it for now, to cover my refining cost. I feel good about the outcome, but was sure hoping that the initial lode would have been sufficient to obtain my 5 OZs. GH

Very nice! Let's see a pic of the gold bars when you get them. I may have to do that next time.

Fantastic story GH, when I get a chance I think that is what I'll do with my scrap stuff. I like the bars. Will they give you a choice of bars or 1 oz gold coins.Keep up the good work.HH

Yes PaPa, you choose what you would like. They usually stock Gold Eagles or Candian Maple Leafs. You must get to an even 1 OZ. or get the balance in credit or pay the difference. They do not offer any smaller denominations other than 1 Troy OZ. I originally was asking for 1) 5 Troy OZ. bar, but unfortunately they were not available from their supplier. What I don't fully understand is since they are a refinery, why they do not make their own bars? They actually order those from someone else. I guess the real pimpy molding/minting process is a whole other business. GH

Yeah! That's what I'm talkin' 'bout! Nice buddy!

Hey, where in the heck did Mr. Chile (AKA Skully) ever disappear to anyway? He ought to be popping up here any time now, slamming on you for cashing out your stuff...like he did me. Looking at HIS treasure chest, I wouldn't want to even guess what the assay would be. I look at it like this...if I don't want it, my wife doesn't want it, and my daughter doesn't want it, then I'll post a picture of it on the forums and then it's off to Midwest with it! :)

Well done bro!
