Another Garrett Fan Here (Ace 250)

New guy here - Philip in North Carolina. I bought my wife a 250 for Christmas & of course, I HAD to try it out. Found a few things (I'll send photos later) & now I'm hooked! So, I ordered me one (same model, bigger coil too as well as standard one. I have been reading in this forum since before Christmas, and the folks here helped me decide on this model for a beginner like my wife and I.
I thank ALL who have shared information regarding this lil' gem & I hope to make some cool friends in the future here.
Happy NEW YEAR & Thanks again.

Philip :)

Find all the posts on using the thing by doing a search for the words 'Ace', '250', and so on. Here's one tip I have firmly settled on with the 250:

Keep the coil moving.

Do it smoothly, with a rhythym. Use the hand-float grip, as it's balanced right for it:

Allow the detector to "float" in your hand at its balance point and dont wrap your fingers in a tight grip on the handle. I place my thumb under the housing below the word "Ace" to get it started. Then let if float in your hand as you move it about.

But dont get into the trap that most newbies do - hovering and pinpointing to death. The 250 excels at rapid response and should be kept moving, circling your targets and homing in. Once you have them narrowed down, use the MindsEye Pinpoint Technique as well as the normal pinpoint.
But allow the Yeller Feller to work at it's best - on the move.

Thanks!
I could hardly sleep thinking about the "beeps" that are outside waiting to be found LOL :)
Speaking of that; I purchased some headphones for the wife and I - they had the smaller plug, so I got the larger 1/4" plugs, too - plugged them in and could'nt hear anything with "ol yeller" - I plugged them to the TV and they worked without the 1/4 plug. They are volume controlled & that feature works with the TV, too... I turned the volume up all the way on the headphones w/OY and still no sound. Gonna take them back & try another style, I guess...
Now the way I have been using the Ace. I have found that it is very comfortable to use - as I sway the coil back n forth, suddenly there's a "ding" - go back "ding" - so I press the pinpoint from way beyond the target - low pitch humm - sway the coil toward the target, gets louder "vrowwwww" bars go to the right, then back - try forward to back - same results - home in - and I assume the target is between the top and lower "inner coil" (?) - I have read and tried the "as soon as the sound stops while pulling back to you in PP mode - target should be just beneath the top part of inner coil. I really don't want to have to dig holes the size of the inner oval. What could I do to perfect this method? LOL
I'm also a photographer, so being out in nature will be difficult to have two of my favorite hobbies fighting over which gets control ;)

Thanks again to all of you guys!

Philip

Hey Philip:

Go to the Garrett website, home page, there are 2 links to pinpointing with the Ace 250. Very clear description of what to do for regular, irregular, and shallower targets.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
