Howdy all,
Yesterday I saw rolls of sod down the street at the construction site. I had gone over this area last Saturday because I knew they were getting close to being finished. I didn't find all that much and wasn't going to try again, but for some reason decided this is the last chance before things get buried in another two inches of topsoil and three of grass. The sod layers already had one side of the street done when I headed over. I started far away from them and immediately got a nice buffalo and merc. Hmmmmmm. Looks like I didn't do a very thorough job last pass through, which kind of made sense because I was out in the sun for several hours and was pretty whacked by the time I got to this spot.
So I walked over to close to where they were laying sod and began the race. It's pretty hard to detect when you have tons of trash and then add in the noise of the back-up warning horns of several bob-cats. I tried to grid and re grid at 90 degrees but much of the time they were already laying down sod before I could finish. Typical construction, some coins in undisturbed dirt, some were in loose dirt that had been moved. It seems at this site they made an effort to reuse much of the black dirt instead of hauling it all away and bring in clean fill. Which meant coins could be about anywhere.
Got five silver dimes, barber, merc, 3 roosies. Three indian heads, a buffalo and a handful of wheats.
Later decided since I was all dirty I would head across town to another construction site I spotted a couple of days ago. Not much dirt removed, checked where the sidewalks had been pulled but not diddly-squat. Ground is way too dry for regular detecting so I started heading back to the car. I came upon one more sidewalk slab that had been removed. Got a signal that just screamed silver. Thought it was going to be an aluminum can: The construction workers often crush and toss them on the ground before they fill. Couldn't really tell if the dirt hear had been disturbed. But was real happy to probe down and pull out a Barber quarter. I swung the coil over the hole again and it still screamed silver. Probed again and pulled up a Barber half. I was hoping my detector would keep screaming all afternoon, but not the case. Don't think I've ever pulled a half and quarter in the same hole.

I checked my records and this is the first day I've found Barber half, quarter, and dime. I should probably go back out and try find a V-nickel to try fill out all the Charles Barber designed coins. Think a shower and a beer is more likely.
