Another faulty SE coil ? Expert advice needed.

This is the problem , while i was out detecting today my SE started giving lots of false low tones , i had to go home because the detector was unusable. I have noticed that if i touch my finger on the bottom of the left side of the coil (with coil cover off) then the detector will give a low tone , as i remove my finger then another low tone is heard , my question is this - Should touching the bottom of the coil with my finger (with coil cover removed) cause the detector to sound off. It gives a very low tone i have been finding nothing with detector last few days because of this problem. Should the bottom of the coil be so sensitive that it sounds off from just lightly touching with my finger.

The coils are shielded against this, you can touch it, rub it lightly, etc. and it should not false. Sounds like you have a bare spot on the coil that was not sheilded properly. Or there could be a pin hole in the resin or some other opening and moisture has made a path to the shielding and drain wire inside and it will false until it dries out.

When making homemade coils I noticed the coil is very sensitive before its shielded, simply waving my hand over the windings without touching them will create a false signal. After the shielding paint is applied I can manhandle them pretty good with no issues.

ok thanks for the advice charles , the problem started after recent rain fall so maybe the pin hole in resin of coil is the cause , anyway who knows what the cause is , minelab are sorting the problem out for me . Does any one know if the older explorer 2 coil will work with an se , i thought of buying a second coil as a back up coil.

All coils are interchangeable between the Explorers and the Quattro.
