another coil question

Read many old posts regarding peoples choices of coils. Still have a question or two. What are the pros and cons of round vs eliptical? Other than the elipticals being DD and better in mineralized ground. Are the elipticals better in target separation? And what are the big differences between the 4x6 and 6x10 Whites? Is it only that the 4x6 may be better at picking up smaller nuggets but less coverage? Is the 4x6 THAT much different in trash seperation than the 6x10? Is there much of a difference between the two at all? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Did some more research and am down to one question. Difference between 4x6 and 6x10 as far as depth. Are we talking 1/2 to 1 inch? or is it as much as 2-3 inches? depending on ground conditions.
O.K. two questions. Which would you prefer for nugget shooting? Would you go with the 4x6 in order to pick up the smaller nuggets? Maybe squeeze it into smaller crevices? Or go with the 6x10 for more coverage and a bit more depth? Back to that depth question again.

5" EXcelerator and 8" EXcelerator. I will say that I have yet to tey the 10" open-design EXcelerator in a nugget potential site, so I will leave that door open for change.
You first asked about ROUND coils and ELLIPTICAL coils, but included the comment that elliptical coils are Doiuble-D designs. Actually, if you are referring to the two popular elliptical coils that White's makes for the MXT, then you are correct.
But the PHYSICAL SHAPE of a coils is NOT a sure thing when it comes to determining INTERNAL WINDINGS.
Several manufaturers make an elliptical coil that is a concentric design, and then several Double-D (widescan) coils are made in a round shape.
There has been a lot of ink wasted in print, too, alluding to marvelous performance of a D-D coil in "highly mineralized" sites, but that is not a 100% fact. There are too many variables that come into play to the have such absolutes!

DPW, as far as nugget hunting is concerned, my tests of the MXT, with various coils, in highly mineralized Mojave Desert soil, reveal the following: the 10x6 DD can find nuggets as small as 1/4 grain, the 6x4 as small as 1/10th grain. Not a whole lot of difference there. On larger nuggets, at the same gain setting, the 10x6 gets 25-30% greater depth than does the 6x4. In actual practice that means a nugget that the 6x4 could get will find to 7" deep the 10x6 will find to 9" deep. (Actual tests) The 10x6 covers about 50% more ground per sweep then does the 6x4. My choice, for overall use, and especially nugget hunting: go for the 10x6. Greater depth, greater ground coverage, with virtually no noticable loss of small nuggets. Hope this helps; HH jim

Yep. Gets about 20% more depth, with about 40% more ground coverage then the 10x6. Yet it is still very sensitive to small AU. HH jim

I bought a 10x14DD over the winter based on the early reviews but have not tried it out yet.
I think I made the right decision in getting it.
Going to Florida in a couple of weeks to see if I can find any beach that has not been "replenished".

I'm in the process of selling one on ebay. I finally decided that I just don't have anywhere around here to make it worthwhile. I wish I was closer to some ocean beaches, it would've got used then. I'm wanting to do some nugget hunting this summer, I may then wish I had it back.
