Another Classic 3 SL Report

Took My Modified CL-3SL out for a short time today. In case you didn't read my last post further down the thread,I have CL3-SL modified by Mr Bill that I bought from Monte several years ago.I hunt in very trashy conditions a lot. For those conditions I use the 5.5 ferret coil that I also bought from Monte and I'm sure glad I did! Right now that coil is hard to find.Using the Black Sand switch and disc at ring range or below will increase sensitivity and handle bad ground very well.Today I had one of those iffy signals which I thought was trash or a nail or the coil was too close to the ground.Sometimes on this machine if you get the coil too close to the ground even a coin lying flat can make the double blip sound which it did at first. When I raised the coil if still sounded iffy so in turned out to be a coin on edge.I was really surprised because I usually don't find many of them especially with the Classic. It didn't detect the coin as deep as some detectors could but it still detected it.There is not much surface for eddy currents on the side of a coin but the C3Sl did come through for me.I probably wouldn't of found it with a larger coil. But it just shows that it can be done.I have had this detector for a long time and I am still learning things about it.My ground is not too mineralized and I have been over this area for about a year and still find things but I'm not sure why I missed them in the first place. The C3SL modified with small coils is killer in trash and iron.I do get a little chatter under some power lines but not that I have to make any adjustments. It's still easy to hear a good signal in those conditions.I run sensitivity max most of the time.I hardly ever have to turn it down on my machine. With a larger coil, it also makes a great Relic detector! There is nothing about this detector I dislike. For the kind of hunting I do It's hard to beat.Gobs of coils to choose from.Batteries last longer than most.Easy to setup,Easy to understand the audio once you learn it.With the small coil I use It will pinpoint dead on.I hardly ever have to trigger to all metal to pinpoint.Anyway I just wanted everyone to know that the Classics can still compete with lots of new machine out there.I still can't figure out why they were discontinued.I agree with Monte 100% about the Classics.I am not selling mine! It has always been a keeper!

I hunt in very trashy conditions a lot. For those conditions I use the 5.5 ferret coil that I also bought from Monte - and I'm sure glad I did! Right now that coil is hard to find.

Using the Black Sand switch and disc at ring range or below will increase sensitivity and handle bad ground very well.
Today I had one of those iffy signals which I thought was trash or a nail or the coil was too close to the ground.
Sometimes on this machine if you get the coil too close to the ground even a coin lying flat can make the double blip sound which it did at first.
When I raised the coil it still sounded iffy, so in turned out to be a coin on edge.

I was really surprised because I usually don't find many of them especially with the Classic. It didn't detect the coin as deep as some detectors could but it still detected it. There is not much surface for eddy currents on the side of a coin, but the C3Sl did come through for me. I probably wouldn't have found it with a larger coil. But it just shows that it can be done.

I have had this detector for a long time and I am still learning things about it. My ground is not too mineralized and I have been over this area for about a year and still find things but I'm not sure why I missed them in the first place.

- Gobs of coils to choose from.
- Batteries last longer than most.
- Easy to setup.
- Easy to understand the audio, once you learn it.

Anyway I just wanted everyone to know that the Classics can still compete with lots of new machine out there. I still can't figure out why they were discontinued. I agree with Monte 100% about the Classics. I am not selling mine! It has always been a keeper!
Since I got mine, I find I reach for it more and more, for the reasons you have mentioned. I got the BM600 coil recently from Hal and it works like a charm - nice and tight, with reasonable depth.

I have never heard of the Ferret coil, so now I am wondering: Is there a better coil then the BM600? Should I go on another "Coil Quest?"

I don't think they make the ferret coils anymore.Mine is called a Hot Head High Energy Ferret 5.5 coil.It is a Hot little coil.I use it most of the time because I hunt in very trashy areas and it does the job with excellent target seperation. Very easy to pinpoint with and makes the balance just about perfect. The coil is very sensitive especially with the setup I use.One more time.I am talking about a Whites Classic 3 SL with Mr Bill's modifications which include and external ground balance control, external threshold control, plus the sensitivity has been tweaked and I also have a toggle switch on mine which changes the auto re-tune speed to slow for better all metal pinpointing in one position and switched the other way puts it back to normal. So when I pull the trigger to all metal mode to pinpoint it keeps the signal from fading too quickly and gives me plenty of time to hover the coil over target.I really love this feature!Anyway, back to the Ferret.I don't know who else is using this 5.5 coil but I won't ever sell mine.I like it better than the Blue-Max 350.It covers more ground than the 350 but the 350 is for extremely trashy ares for getting in between tight places and getting the goodies mixed in with trash and for very small targets. My Ferret will do the same thing,it's just slightly bigger and more sensitive with my setup.I bought my Ferret from Monte several years ago when I bought the C3 SL from him.He gave me a great deal on both.I can't remember the price of the Ferret at the time but new it wasn't cheap!I think Kco use sell them but it's been a while and I can't remember. If Monte reads this post he'll know all the details about it.I wish I could fine another 5.5 Ferret but no luck so far.It was made for the Whites 6.59khz detectors at the time and that's all I can tell you right now.If you do find one,and use it please post it and let us know what you think. It is the Best little coil of that size that I have used so far.

I remember these coils. If I recall correctly they could be purchased from Kellyco, and maybe others.

!
I can believe that. One of the things I dont like is the trend to fast retune speeds. I wonder if Mr Bill can add this to my modified C-ID?
