Another Big First For Me! US Eagle Breast Plate!

I got a little detecting time on Sunday and went to a new spot in hopes of some Civil War relics. I've been trying to locate ground in a heavily developed area to find pockets to dig in. This spot is pretty much a swamp surrounded by thickets and some small areas of grass. I got started and could quickly tell that most of the grassy area was fill dirt. There was some higher ground on the other side of the swamp and I made my way across, the first good signal was a nice dropped bullet. I slowly worked my way around digging tons of trash and then I got a great signal down deep right next to one of the bullets I had just dug. I cut a nice big plug and worked my way down about 10"-12" and rolled out a heavy round disk and could see the lead back. I did the "please let this be a breast plate" prayer as I was turning it over and trying to get the caked on mud off to reveal that beautiful eagle! I was in shock and so excited to get my first one! I spent some time getting a few pics and just enjoying the moment. I hunted it pretty hard and found a few more bullets along with a flat button, a knapsack triangle and a really old latch clasp. It sure is a good feeling when you hunt these out of the way shot in the dark areas and they pay off. It makes up for all the other times I hunt a spot and get skunked. HH-David

Scooper Dave, a Hewge' Congrat's to you on the find of the Eagle Breast Plate , the minnie's, and all the other finds. That is some great CW Saves for sure. The Eagle Breast Plate is on my list of Bucket List finds. It has alluded me for over 30 years but I'm still looking. Keep at this spot, there may be more History to be pulled up from below.

Thanks Confetrit! There’s a ton of history around this area. I dug two buckles, a spur, a few nice buttons and a ton of bullets just about 200 yards from here. You never know where you will find a pocket holding these relics. I hope you get to dig an eagle plate soon! Good luck to ya!

Thanks! I imagine it would be tough to find any Civil War relics but should be areas holding some Indian War relics. You every see anything from that era come up?

A lot of musket balls and there is an area right next to my mother in laws house that the Pequot Indians inhabited I've seen diggings done in the woods there..
And actually George Washington stayed in a house in my town on Lyme street near the school where I work and Lafayette's troops camped on our town Green!

Awesome finds. Thanks for sharing. I found one of the breast plates a couple years ago and always wondered what it was. Never thought to research and tie to civil war.

That’s pretty cool. I would look around that area for more Civil War relics.
