Another Big First For Me! US Eagle Breast Plate!

Sooper Dave

Well-known member
I got a little detecting time on Sunday and went to a new spot in hopes of some Civil War relics. I've been trying to locate ground in a heavily developed area to find pockets to dig in. This spot is pretty much a swamp surrounded by thickets and some small areas of grass. I got started and could quickly tell that most of the grassy area was fill dirt. There was some higher ground on the other side of the swamp and I made my way across, the first good signal was a nice dropped bullet. I slowly worked my way around digging tons of trash and then I got a great signal down deep right next to one of the bullets I had just dug. I cut a nice big plug and worked my way down about 10"-12" and rolled out a heavy round disk and could see the lead back. I did the "please let this be a breast plate" prayer as I was turning it over and trying to get the caked on mud off to reveal that beautiful eagle! I was in shock and so excited to get my first one! I spent some time getting a few pics and just enjoying the moment. I hunted it pretty hard and found a few more bullets along with a flat button, a knapsack triangle and a really old latch clasp. It sure is a good feeling when you hunt these out of the way shot in the dark areas and they pay off. It makes up for all the other times I hunt a spot and get skunked. HH-David

What an awesome find Dave! That is a sweet plate. I can't wait to find one myself one day. Really like that old clasp too. Very unusual and great patina.

Thanks Dave. All you need now is a box plate and that ever elusive CSA plate.

Yeah both of those are on my list. Any CS buckle would be incredible! There’s been a bunch pulled out around these parts. Sure hope there’s one left for me to luck up on. Until then I will just keep at it.

Cool find Dave, nice to see the Etrac finding some good relics

Wow! Now that's some "super" relic hunting Dave. Sounds like it took some good detective work. Ah,so many bucket listers and so little time. Congrats on a great find!

Great find Dave, what ID Number did it give you on the Etrac

Thanks Rick! I’m pretty sure it was a deep 10-44 12-44 kind of signal. I don’t pay much attention to the numbers when I’m relic hunting.

Thanks chipper! Yeah the research is as much fun as detecting. It’s like being a history detective and putting all the clues together. I hear ya on the bucket list but that’s what keeps us going out! Good luck to ya!

Congrats on a very rare find Dave !

Kurt just found a Breast Plate that's a twin to yours on the newest "Hoover Boys" video on Youtube - check it out !

Thanks Mark! Yeah I watched the video and was drooling over that one! I made a comment about how nice it was and then found this one just a few days later. You never know what and when you fill find that next big keeper!

That is a stellar find Dave!
I have found a few civil war, militia buttons and three ringers up here over the years and get excited when I see them.
I cant imagine what it felt like seeing that in the hole.

That’s not a bucket lister for me,that would be a “crap myself” lister. I cannot even imagine....congrats on a drooler Dave!

It's a huge rush to dig such a personal piece from a soldier. I hope you dig some big brass soon! Good Luck!
