POSTED: 8:36 am EDT September 16, 2010
AVON, Conn. -- Connecticut authorities said they had to put down a 1-year-old male black bear that was hit by a car because its injuries were severe.
Police in Avon say the 100-pound bear was struck shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday on West Avon Road near the Governor's Horse Guard stables.
State Department of Environmental Protection police were called in to help search for the bear after it wandered away after the accident. DEP spokesman Dennis Schain says officers found the bear and had to put it down because of its injuries.
The DEP said Connecticut's black bear population has been increasing since the 1980s.
