Another Beach Sand Scoop Mod

Sven

Well-known member
Temps now at 33 degrees sun is going away, the clouds rolling in.
Decided to do a quick scoop mod. I love my small hand scoop for dry sand hunting, but.......
the handle is somewhat awkward for me. I generally scoop away and up from me, puts my wrist in
a bad position. With bad wrists, they hurt at the end of a long hunt.

A mod was thought of a few weeks ago. This morning a another thought popped into my head, decided to act on it.
remembered I had a complete 1980's Gold Mountain detector handle set up stored away. Found it and started mod'ing.

Filed off the rivet heads on the orig scoop handle, removed the handle from the stem. Grabbed the GM handle, fitted it into position and drilled new mounting holes for stainless steel bolts. Then finally cut off the excess handle I did not need. Now the handle has several different positions you can hold it for ease of scooping. You could at this point push the scoop into the sand with your foot.

Already thought of using the rest of the rod assembly to make an longer extension so you didn't have to bend over so far, that's for another day. Final addition to the scoop when I get the material is to braze or silver solder a smaller 1/8" holed mesh to the area near the back of the scoop and bottom.

Now just to find some long flexible foam to use as a grip

Works great, tried it yesterday.
Only one slight problem, didn't put any foam grips on it, hand slips around.
Found one foam grip last night and put it on, makes a huge difference.
Actually going to put three foam grips on, spot tested with a single grip in all positions on the handle.
By covering the entire handle in fiam provides the ultimate grip at any given point.
Going out today to buy some more. Will post a picture later today.

Go to your local hardware store and buy a length of foam pipe wrap.......NGE
