Another article by Uncle Willy -Desert Survival part 1

You can increase water production by putting any green vegetation you can find down in the hole under the plastic, making sure it doesn't actually touch the plastic. The moisture will evaporate out of the vegetation and condense on the plastic even it there isn't much moisture in the sand/dirt.
We found a dead guy just off the Camino del Diablo when we were out camping there about 15 years ago. He didn't have any ID but apparently was a Mexican trying to walk up to Tacna. He was just a few hundred yards north of a windmill that had been taken down for service by the BLM so there was no water available there. We called the BP on a ham repeater and they sent a heli out to verify that it was indeed a dead would-be immigrant and then they said they would send a Bronco when they could and got back in their heli and left. We spent the night a couple hundred yards away from the body and nobody had come to claim it by the morning when we packed up and left. The BP agents acted like it was a fairly common occurrence.

Evaporation and condensation. The desert is full of water but it's all underground. The sun beats down on the plastic and the hole and evaporates the water in the sand. It rises up, hits the plastic, condenses back to liquid and flows down the cone and drips into the container. Simple grade school science. :)

Yeah I know about the vegetation but often there ain't much around but if there is it just enhances the water production. People would be surprised at how much water the desert holds. It's like a giant sponge. Animals know it and will dig and hit moisture. As for illegals the deserts are strewn with their remains. Several hundred a year die crossing over. Theu probably never did come back for the body.
