another 3 hours and found a problem maybe ??

Ok, I spent 3 hours hunting early this morning and I did ok finding,
(17) quarters
(13) dimes
(7) nickels
(20) pennies 1 canadian and 1 wheatie..
1 copper ring that said Best

Now for my small problem. I was using the 11 dd coil and found a spot that would give me repeated signals of 89-91 but It was very intermittant. After some digging I pulled 3 or four quartes but it seems that the quarter would mask completely out. I was in disc with 100 sens and the disc around 54.
I even had a quarter show up on the surface after some digging and would not initally make a souns.. Now I am not sure if it is because the battery was getting low or because it was trying to sigal an overload because of the multi targets. or a combo of both..I am going to try he 5" on monday and see what happens....

It would not sound off even though there was a quarter under it.. so I do not know if it was being masked because of multiple targets or because the battery was low and the multiple targets reacted like it was an overload signal....
I was on the last battery indicator..so maybe it is a battery issue..

should be OK with one bar showing, if the machine is on overload it comes up on the screen overload, sounds a bit strange it should pick that coin up on the surface, i know when i have coins on surface it will sounds like a machine gun going off, did you do some tests after throw a coin on the ground and see what happens? was it working OK before and after? sometimes coil spills will make some strange sounds and different sounds than one coin.

Could have been the battery because i had the same problem with mine not enough power to pick up the signal. Thats why i change every 8 hrs of hunting.

Jim --

I am going to take a wild guess here --

I am trying to understand something called "wrap around" -- which is where a normally high conductive signal can be SO high, that it "wraps around" -- into the iron range. Then, if you have disc set to discriminate iron, (you did), your machine sees it as "iron" and thus discs it out. This is hard for me to explain, but basically, several quarters together might be TOO high for the machine to ID properly. Best I can explain, based on my current understanding, is imagine that 0 VDI is small iron, and 100 is a silver dollar or something. Imagine this range is in a "circle," so that if your target is reading (to the machine) even HIGHER than 100, it "wraps around" into the single digit range -- i.e., it tricks the machine into thinking it's iron. And if you had iron disced out, you would not hear it. Make any sense at all?

Next time this happens, put your machine in all-metals mode (or, use zero disc), and see if those quarters don't re-appear.

Well i gidid jump into all metal.. but with the 11 inch coil it was a little hard to narrow . I think what your saying maybe be the problem.I wanted to go back today but was not up to it and its been too hot for me here in ny. Hoping for another nice day or two to hunt before the 5 th when I go to NYC. I might bring back one of my other detectors to try here and see how it reacts.

Well I guess my last post was censored out, All I did was post a link to a thread on wraparound. JIM G did you get my Pm sent to you?

Yes, I got your pm if you want to send me more info just send it pm..so no body worries about it...
I hope to check out that spot with the smaller coil and see if there are perhaps some more quarters I was unable to locate due to the war around effect...

Looking at the Wheaties I got the other day I think it is an early birthday gift...
1956 wheat.... my year.
Is wrap around a phenomena typical to the newer detectors with CPU's in them ?

post about the wrap around, and post it on the metal detecting forum here at Finds. Come back here, making a post with a link to the one you made on the Metal Detecting Forum. If it's too much for you, make the "wrap-a-round" post on the Metal Detecting Forum, and I will take care of putting in the link.

Feel free to contact me.

what is this some sort of secret know ones allowed to know about?

sounds like the wrap around effect has a pole involved

i can not recall having this problem.

Steve Gave a pretty good basic post about wrap around I guess we are not allowed to post links to other forums, and that is why it was deleted.
Amberjack When a pole is involved I think its reach around! Good luck with that :heh:
Jim Sending you the link in a Pm hope it helps!
Mr Bill Thanks but I'm not the one who made the great post explaining wrap around on the other forum it was someone far more knowledgeable than myself I just wanted to share it. No. sense in recreating the wheel!
HH

i haven't cuddled a pole for years :lmfao: give up drinkin years ago :clapping:

does this wrap around effect happen often? i guess it happens with pocket spills? i have found a few and just goes off like a machine gun. then i find them with the pointer while i am down there. so i guess if it has happened i wouldn't know?

AJ

I've read Steve's post 3 times..and yes it makes sense. It's best to hunt in all metals mode, and if a target is hit, flip over to discrim if you wish. This will allow us to avoid any wrap-arounds. Thanks!
