Another 180 meter question

Hello all, I just purchased a NOS minelab 180 meter to help with tones I'm unsure of ( I don't know why because I dig all the better tones anyway ?) It is my understanding that these meters should be calibrated for 180 on a quarter ?? But I swear the instruction with this one ( if I'm reading them right ) says to calibrate it at 55 for a quarter. From the instruction pamplet Slowly pass a common coin across the coil and finely adjust the calibration to the nearest number divisible by 5 eg U.S. quarter 55 AUS 20cent set to 50. This is a pamplet for the XS-2a Pro and I have a GT but I didn't think it made a differance ?? Thanks!

There is no difference for the meter on any of the Sovereign series, so it will be the same on the GT.
Looking at the meter it is not one made by Minelab and think this is one made in the UK so they maybe using a different scale like the 550 meter, but only using 2 numbers so the last number will not show and why you get a 55 number, so it will not be a 180 meter.

Instructions today are weak. Its talking about the window area of adjustment, not the actual meter number. You can't adjust your meter to read 55 on a quarter.
You only have a small window of adjustment around any target. So if you wave a US quarter (highest meter reading) under the coil and get 178, it is likely that you could only adjust it from 177 or so to 182-183.

That meter is an aftermarket one being made over seas. I'm pretty sure it's a 180 style meter, so adjust to 180.

Actually I don't use a coin to adjust mine anymore. This is a handy tip for people...When the machine resets (you can often get it to do this by thumping the coil on the ground, and it will also reset more often if you have your sensitivity high) you'll notice it displays a negative number while resting. On the Digisearch meter if the machine is calibrated to read 180 on a coin at rest the meter will read -506. So I just adjust it to read -506 when the machine resets. Works like a charm and far less hassle than putting a coin on the ground and such. Just remember to adjust the meter again after about 8 minutes after the machine was turned on because often the calibration will drift a bit when the machine finally warms up. Once you adjust it then (after it's been on for say 8 or 10 minutes) you shouldn't have to adjust it again.

Very nice info Critter..
My homade meter never registers -506 even though I have it calibrated at 180 for a quarter.
I believe it is because it derrives its power from a battery as opposed to the coil output power.

Out of curiosity and not to hijack anothers thread, has anybody ever gotten a 184?
On occasion I have hit hard on a good shallow signal and got a 184. When I resweep it resets to 180.

The reason I ask is I'm curious if my meter is quirky or the Sov GT occasionally spikes to 184 (1.84 volts).
Its only happened 3 times so far in the months I've been using the meter.

I've had that happen a few times, and it just occured again the other day. Got a 183 on a target and then when re-sweeping over it it read 180 like it should. Had me exicted for a second thinking I must be over a large bar of solid silver.

You're meter doesn't reset to a negative number when the machine resets (which often happens when sensitivity is too high or you thump the coil on the ground)? Usually the threshold will "reset" when this happens to let me know to look at the meter and see if it's reading -506 like it should. It's important to keep the coil still when it does this so it doesn't go back to normal numbers, so I can tweak for -506. I'm sure it's a different number on other meters than the Digisearch meter, though.

What a coincidence, it happened again today. It was a high EMI location. The last area was high EMI also now that I put 2 and 2 together.
