annoying power cables:ranting:

i tryed to detect in a new field today with my sovereign machine but i had to give up and go home early. the field has a railway line with the overhead power cables running along the edge of the field and there is pylon cables also overhead running down the center of the field. i love my sovereign when it is working well but today i felt like throwing it away it was a case of 1 minute hunting and 6 minutes wiped out.
i like to hunt with my 12" coil which seams to be more sensitive to the cables. i have used a small 4" coil before in fields near power cables which the machine doesn't seam to get bothered as much but if you have ever used that size coil in a large field before you will know just how frustrating it is to hunt with one.
does anyone know of a good 10" or a 12" coil that doesn't attract the power cables or is there any mods to help stop this kind of thing from happening.

Sovereign-fan i used to hunt beside and under power lines and had no trouble, maybe because i mostly hunted in silent search, and flipped the noise cancel switch.

Depends on what the noise spectrum is. All power line areas are not equal. Some places require an awful lot of distance to prevent bad chatter.....and changing the band switch or running silent search will do nothing to help.
Depends on the place.

A couple of beaches I hunt are right next to roads with overhead lines and the only way I can get the sov to work there is set the sens fully clockwise at its lowest position. Ive used an S12, both tornado coils and the coinsearch there and no problems if at the lowest sens position.

I'm starting to believe that the more things inline on the Sov, the more potential for EMI issues. I recently hunted a park I've had no issues at in the past, and the only difference was that I had put my DTI II meter back on my Sov (also had the Sunray probe), and it was going bonkers at this park. I recall reading someone else having that problem, and they stripped their machine down to just the coil and control box, and it ran fine. I plan to take the Sov back to this pack and see if that's the case.

Just a thought.

Years ago when I still used to hunt land I was hunting a Field where the High Power Lines were and my Sov was going crazy. I tried lowering the Sensitivity but it didn't help. I have always hunt with the Discrimination set to minimum. Out of desperation I tried increasing the discrimination thinking that I might just be able to disc out the interference. When I got the Discrimination to right around the Preset Mark (this is still well below the point where a nickel is rejected) on the dial the electrical interference was eliminated and I was able to hunt the field. A few years later I was hunting in Atlantic City in front of the Casinos and had the same problem with electrical interference so I tried the technique again and it worked again. So you might want to try using the Discrimination Control and Sensitivity Controls together to eliminate the electrical noise. JMHO

i tryed the Sensitivity at its lowest position but that didn't work. i will try adjusting the Discrimination next time and see what happens. chears guys.......

I am telling you i used to hunt near the main high power lines, like the ones that power the entire city! were other detectors would not go.I used the sovereign all the time. But i never hunted in threshold mode,i always hunted in silent search. The sovereign was my best detector around most power lines.
