Andy was right...

Today at the old park, I was going slow and paying attention to iffy signals. At this park, anything over 6" is old....so I get a 12-37 at 8" deep. In Andy's book when talking about the Old US Coin Program, I remember reading something along the lines of "if you skip out on 12-37 because you're almost certain it's a zinc penny, you're crazy." So at 8" I figured what the heck? After hitting 8" out pops 2 wheat pennies and a merc all stuck together. I couldn't believe it. Still I would've thought the signal would've been higher, but it wasn't. I'll post pics in a later thread, but in my opinion this throws a wrench into what I decide to dig in the future. Thanks for that bit of advice Andy!!

I just set up a program so I can cherry pick, have everything under 42 discriminated out. I might have to go back and set its second program up to that I can find targets at 12-37 and up and open up a small area for nickles.

I just don't give the numbers that much weight. It's more about signal strength IMHO

If that's the case a tejon would be a better choice, beep dig.
No need for a $1500.00 machine.

I am not sure but I think I just counted 9 different detectors in your arsenal? May be off a couple there
but I don't understand the thought process of spending $1500.00 on one machine that will do it all
compared to what you had to spend on 9? How long does it take you to load up to go metal detecting?

The really great thing about the CTX is you dont have to dig to tell what it is the vast majority of the time. Using the tone, the icon location, the size and shape of the icon, and the trace function, and finally the numbers, it almost always tells you what is there. I have two machines now, the CTX and a new F75. The F75 is faster, lighter, way deeper, but it is terrible on ID'ing a target at depth.

It is nice the CTX will ID at that depth but I don't pay any attention to target ID on deep targets. Any repeatable target at that depth gets dug regardless of ID...... It might not always be a coin but more often than not, it is a nice or interesting find.

Yeah, you'll lose a couple points at depth. A target that would otherwise be a 12:40 might drop to a 12:37 at 6+ inches and even more past that.

I do the same Larry. You would not believe the interesting stuff that is found at that depth.

I've owned the F75 and now own the CTX...The CTX is not only deeper, but ID's better...This crap about the F75 being way deeper, give me a break...LOL...

Cant say much about people that own many detectors as I own 5 or 6 myself.
Do I really need that many? ... no ... but I want them for one reason or another.
They are tools and as such no one tool is right for every job.

There are a lot of people that trade thru 8 detectors a year looking for that perfect machine or just wanting to try something new.
Just look at the classifides and you will see.

Nothing wrong with all that ... I do it myself ...
but I sometimes wonder if I would have been better off starting out with a good quality detector and sticking with it long enough to learn all that it is trying to tell me.

Nothing wrong with trying to find a detector that fits you best, but a lot of people don't realize you have to get one thats just "good" for you and then learn it. Constaly moving from one detector to another, you will never truly learn to run that detector to it's best.

You about summed it all up right there. The CTX give you ALOT of information to help you decide what to dig and what to leave. The ID at depth is one of the best I have used.

Nice Dig.
I would agree that anytime your hunting those old areas with deep coins that you don't want to pay as much attention to the numbers as you do all the other indicators. If I get a nice spot on the graph and the sound and depth are good....DIG IT. After a few of them you start to trust the machines other indications more.
