I was at a neighborhood yard sale a month ago and bought this watch. At the time I was interested in the watch band...it looked interesting, old and was marked Sterling. The watch on the other hand was not marked in any way other than "Wittenauer" on the dial, which you could barely see because the crystal was so scratched/aged.I wound it and it ticked, and it did look well made.I ended up buying it for $40.00 bucks,$10 less than she was asking.
Last week i took some found MDing items and the watch to my jeweler for his valued assessments....Nothing much for the MD finds, but when i showed him the watch band...HE looked at the watch...looked at me..shook his head, not saying anything for several seconds....He then told me"you could walk through a sewer and come out smelling like a rose!"...I'll go with right time right place and luck!
The watch is a Wittenauer 1950 vintage chronograph, stainless steel,23 Jewel Swiss movement.Cost me another $40 to get it sent out to have the crystal replaced...estimated value by him.$1500.00 or more according to other web sites.....Thanks for looking
