Ancient history- ca 1990's

I graduated from seminary in 1990 and moved back to my neck of the Louisiana woods. I was introduced to M/Ding by friends who put me in touch with a great local dealer who made me a proud owner of a Fisher 1266. Great machine, but I never got my settings right. With some locational help, I did find a number of 58 cal bullets, right up my history loving alley. But I continued to catch hell from iron, and in 1994 I bought my first Minelab Sovereign. Sure did cut down on the issue of iron- if it was iron the sound changed and I was in hog heaven. I am on Minelab Sovereign # 4 by the way.
I was given permission to hunt an area of land on the Northern perimeter of Port Hudson. We found literally hundreds, if not thousands of bullets and other assorted CW relics. One of my friends found a 5 pounder Ketchum hand grenade in that field, all of 5 feet fro his truck. Bullets, and an area literally covered with knapsack rivets and knapsack hooks didn't surprise any of us.
My great day came when I was hunting in ravines in back of the main field. I was walking the ravine and slowly sweeping its walls when my Machine honked at me that there was something there that wasn't iron. Moving slowly with my digger, removed an eagle breastplate in very good shape. About 1/4 of an inch of the band around the buckle was broken off, but the iron rings were intact and I was one happy Cajun. I love the history and the hunt and the mixture of goofy friends that came with it all. Find have slowed considerably over the years, but I still go out when it's not too hot or too cold. Dear God, I do so love this hobby/sport so much!

Only time I have hunted CW relics was on a hunt in Manassas and in Va when a friend invited me up a couple times. It was a thrill to find something with such a connection to the past... I did find a Yankee spur.

Interesting post indeed!
