Analyze screen

I'm new to the v3i and metal detecting. I have been using it for about 2 weeks and have had good success. However on pg 19 of the guide it briefly goes over "Size", I have read it several times and I still do not understand......can someone explain how size of an object is determined and what is meant by dots across the bottom of the screen.......I have tried placing objects and determining their size, but I must be doing something wrong or I don't understand the 2 inch default they discuss. Thanks

First Welcome to the board....second....the size analyze...well...trust your ears more than your eyes on this one. Short crisp blips on a pinpoint almost always mean a good target(or a small piece of can slaw) If it is a long drawn out beep on pinpoint....chances are its something much bigger than a coin.

I have plenty of long drawn out bleeps in my yard....so I have learned this and proven it to me to be true. Last week I pinpointed on a nice signal in my back yard.....i didnt analyze it...just pinpointed it and dug. It was the bottom half of an Army mess kit......down 7 inches.....thats like......5 inches by 7 inches of aluminum....listen to your machine and believe only half of what you see! Good luck!

Go to your owners manual on page 19 or see page 19 here: http://media.whiteselectronics.com/manuals/V3%20Manuals/spectra_v3i_instruction_manual.pdf

The factory scale means the the full width from one side of the display to the other is two inches, remember this is the scale not actual size. On each side of the camel humps are black bars and this will represent the size of the target or about one inch. That information coupled with the VDI and Icon should indicate a quarter. The trouble with the sizing is that it can be off depending on how fast you swing the coil. The analyze screen is OK to play with, but I think most of us don't use it much if at all. Just about all of the information shown on the analyze screen can be read from the pinpoint screen. You can use the pinpoint mode to size up the size of the target with much more reliability IMHO.

Larry explained it well.
