Analog to Digital Conversion

Took apart my Garrett Master Hunter 7 and connected a little digital voltmeter to the plus and minus leads instead of the analog needle meter. I set the meter to the right voltage scale and VOILA! I had a zero to 100 VDI meter.
Check with the Whites VDI scale or make your own for foreign coins or what ever you hunt.Stick your VDI label on your machine and go! Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks! Now for a tone board, or LED lights!
This should work with other brands with TID too.

All you've done is taken an analog produced signal and displayed in with a digital LCD read-out. That's not the same has a detector designed to work via digital electronics Vs analog technology.

Hi There Monte!
Always an informative pleasure to read your posts, my friend, thanks.
It is my understanding the basic detection circuit on todays current detectors is analog ( basiclly a transmitter and a receiver) and the signal from the receiver circuit is sent though a digital signal processor and computerized analyzer, for "better discrimination capabilities" on some but not all of the newer machines.
An experienced detectorist such as yourself can process these signals mentally without the need of scrolling through a half a dozen discrimination programs I'm sure, saving more time to zone in and detect.
As you well know, the basic detector engine is very similar as between the XLT and the XL Pro for example.
VLF detection technologies hasn't really advanced much since 1985, just in all the bells and whistles.
My little experiment with the Master Hunter 7 was to merely to add a little better resolution to the disciminator with VDI numbers to the MH7's TID instead of the needle. Nothing ground breaking true, just more like moving the furniture around the apartment.
A voltage governed tone generator still sounds like a nice idea, as I do like to hear my signals as opposed to relying on soley on the TDI. These improvements were voiced and desired by other XL Pro owners for their machines including myself.
I admit I am old school, guilty as charged.:surrender:
Keepim Beepin!

Hi Penny finder,

Do a search on messages posted by d1g1man if you haven't already.
Check out the Tone ID video, you two should exchange ideas, sounds like you are kind of two peas in a pod, technology thinking wise.

Drew.

I found this interesting thread on the Geotech forums dated way back in 2005 about the tone ID mod on the XL pro.
Mrand who is credited for the mod in Poland, mentions there wasn't an agreement with hashed out with certain parties because of infringement on the new V3. Remember this was back in 2005.
Makes me go ...Hmmmm!
