An Unbelievable Demonstration With Cortes

RLOH

Well-known member
I just finished a morning of detecting with my Cortes and stopped by a friends house to have a beer and shoot the bull. Another friend stopped by and I started talking detecting to the two of them. I asked my friend to call his neighbor and ask her if I could quickly detect her back yard and give them a quick look at my Cortes in action. The lady next door granted permission and we wandered over to her back yard. I did not bother to bring the headphones, but opted to let them listen to all the sounds. Now for the unbelievable. I turned the Cortes on and went less than five feet and got a 95 number showing silver at 9 inches. Repeated the signal from all directions. With my two buddies intently watching, I dug down 8 inches and the target was still in the ground. I pulled out my Garrett Pro pointer and it signaled dead in the center of the hole. I reached down with my hand and scooped out the loose dirt and saw a big glint of silver. I told them it was a flattened out screw cap, but as I held it, it was too heavy. Wiped the dirt off and it was big silver. A 1954 Franklin half in great shape!I think these two are on the internet looking for a Cortes as we speak. Two people who wanted to see how or if a detector works and they witnessed this in the first 10 seconds of ever seeing a detector in action. I did tell them that this was not an everyday occurance. Now you will need to find the rest of the goodies in your friend's neighbor's yard!

Shows what the Cortes can do. Good job.

Good job on the Half

I hope you told your friends that finding silver half's is not an everyday occurrence. That being said, I hardly ever find clad half dollars, must be because they are not commonly encountered in change received after purchacing stuff.

I found my first and only (so far) in a park this past spring. Thought it was the smashed end of an aluminum can for a moment until I got it out of the sod.

- - Anything that reads tight on 95 would have me on my knees. Honestly, that was a very practical demonstration. Not at all unbelievable. It sounds like your Cortes is working as advertised.

But, to borrow a phrase, "Every silver lining has a cloud."
Now you will have two competitors out there in the field, that you didn't have yesterday. Lets hope your friendship holds as they begin getting into it. I've seen them fall apart that way.

People who don't detect will often see something I find and ask how much it's worth.

That Franklin Half is a wonderful find and just about anybody who detects would be really excited to find it, but I'd let your buddies know it's worth about five bucks.

But since they're not going to believe you now when you say that coins don't just jump out of the ground...

Strongly consider getting back to that ladies' house pronto!
