An old war story...and a brush with a celebrity

Tom's story about some of the mistakes he made as a boy reminded me of some of the stupid foolish things I did as a young man.I thought I would post a story about one such event.
Although I am certainly not proud of it,there was a time in my young adult when I spent many weekend nights in some sort of drinking establishment .Most of the time there were no serious problems, but,as is bound to sometimes happen in these type places, sometimes, someone would get a belly full of beer and feel the need to prove their manhood by starting a fight.
I have always been a fairly big boy,I stood 6

its still hard to keep from getting into trouble. I was always a bit on the "small" side and always tried to go the other way, but once in a while, I got backed into a corner.
Like my Daddy said, most of the time it was that damn beer talkin. Thank God, experiences like yours taught you that just maybe, bars werent your cup of tea. Most of all, you learned from it and were smart enough not to go back and make yourself vulnerable again.

stay away from trouble when i could too. Kid stuff was understandable but when you get 30ish and up guys going into dumb kid mode as soon as they have a couple drinks, well you just know that person is for staying away from, permanently!
I can relate to your story <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Thanks Dan

little things like scars can serve as reminders on how foolish we may have been. I've got a few of those too, more than I want to remember. Thanks for the story Dan!

bars because every time he does, he gets in a fight. Now I find that odd.
I have been going in bars for many years and never get in fights. Not in many years.
I used to do a lot of country dancing. Three or four nights a week for years. That was when I was married to that crazy horse woman <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> After we divorced I would hang out at another country bar for something to do on Friday and Saturday night.
I never got in a single fight. I really don't know why, unless it is the fact that I don't look for them and don't see a person bumping into me as an insult. I usually just laugh it off and say excuse me.
It might be because I am older and they don't want to kill me <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> but I have not always been old. I just don't get upset easily if I have been drinking and never considered fighting fun. At the time it sure can be but win or lose, the next day, I hurt.
I had lunch yesterday with a buddy, Steve. He likes to tell the story to anyone that will listen that the night we met he had come to the bar to kick my ass. It was over a woman thing, I was dating the cousin of the woman he was divorcing and all he heard about was Royal this and Royal that. You know how it goes.
He said he and a buddy came to the bar to kick my ass. I had not done anything but he just didn't like hearing about me.
He said he asked around to find out if Royal was there. I was playing pool and was pointed out to him. He said he laughed to see what an old bastud I was and even though his buddy tried to talk him out of he, he was gonna kick my arse.
I was playing pool and was having a good night. Usually the winner stays on the table and the game is for a beer but I never played that way. A guy challenged me and I automatically bought them a beer. I will not bet. Pool is fun for me and I could usually beat most, if I kept it for fun. This worked for me and kept the anger down on the table.
I guess Steve challenged the table and when he and I played he swears that he tried to pick a fight with me, subtlety I guess. I always tell him that he is not worth a crap at picking a fight because I never knew it! <img src="/metal/html/shocked.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":shock"> <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> That is the truth!
He laughs and tells everyone that he came to the bar to kick my arse and ended up being friends ever since. We still are.
I swear I don't even remember the incident.
In my view, most people that get in fights consistently in a bar, are looking for it or their ego's get in the way.
Heck, I remember one night a guy, a drunk punk, came up to me in that same bar, at the pool table and belligerently told me that his buddy bet him that he could not whip my arse. I guess I should have been scared or something. I just laughed and told him that his buddy was nuts because he looked like a mean old boy but he would look silly wupping an old man like me. I guess my not taking offense and maybe the fact that on closer inspection I had 60 lbs on him settled him down. I bought him a beer and we were friendly ever after.
My buddy that never goes to a bar because he always gets in a fight just looks for a reason to fight in my view.
Now I try two things and it usually works. First I intimidate and if that doesn't work, I negotiate <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">
Heck, now days I hurt BEFORE a fight, I don't have to wait for the next day <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">

Daddy always told us the same thing yours told you. Daddy also said to "Always make the first punch count."
I can just see that ole' boy kissin' the gravel and fallin' like a sack of potatos.
I can hear that bottle on his noggin' "THUMP," and and that was "all she wrote."
Loved the story. He's probably got a scar twixt his eyes!!
Thanks for "funny fix."

I think u cold cocked him Dan <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin"> put it rigt where it was supposed to go......a one punch fight and it got it's point across.....
I saw it time and time again brewing in the old pumphouse and usually trieed my best to make peace.....for my scustomers was my lively hood and wanted them to come back........it is just utter senseless, how some will allow alcohol to get them into big trouble.....instead of having a good time with it
enjoyed your read very much <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

you had to defend yourself. And most often, guys talk big, and you find out that's all they can do -----talk. When it comes down to a fight, it's a different story. Reminds me of the movie "Joe Somebody". If you haven't seen this, you need to. It was a great story!
I enjoyed reading this a lot! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

It would take a lot of beer to get drunk enough to pick a fight with you! <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">
By the time they have enough "liquid courage" to start a fight....they would be too loaded to stand up! <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin"> <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">
I know what you mean about hurting before the fight....some mornings when I roll out of the sack I FEEL like someone thumped me!

just have two things to worry about, when messing with an old fart.
That old sucker just might kick his arse and he would never live it down or they just might kill me and end up in jail <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">
