An observation

Those of us on the west coast are at a huge disadvantage as compared to those on the east coast of the USA. I live in Washington State, and this region was one of the last areas in the lower 48 states to be infiltrated by metal bearing people... those of European decent who brought with them metal items including coins. I know that the Spanish were in New Mexico prior to the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock, however they never ventured up here to the Pacific NW.

What got me thinking about this was watching youtube videos about people in England finding Roman coins and old English gold coins from the 1700s. The more time people spend in an area, the more likely they will have lost items. Those of us who live in areas that were not occupied by people who had metal until the past 100 years or so are at an disadvantage.

You people on the east costs should take advantage of your situation.

O boo who, What about all the gold nuggets lying in the bottom of every creek bed up and down the west coast states? What about all those beaches littered with all that expensive jewelry lost by all those beautiful women waiting for a chance to star in a movie? What about all those beautiful women?

You think you have it rough?! I'll tell you who has it rough! It is us good ole, big hearted, hard workin, midwestern boys have it rough! No gold found here! No beaches here! No Civil War battlefields, No Revolutionary War relics. No buried pirate treasure. No Spanish galleons lost at sea 350 years ago brimming with riches washing up around here. Why I outta......

Heck even the poor pioneers who walked thur here ( to settle your neck of the woods) didn't have any coins to lose. They put everything they had into their wagon, oxen, tools, flour, salt, beans and bacon, just to survive the trip.

Maybe that is why I'm so thankful when I find those occasional silver dimes.

Take care. Dave

Ain't that the truth! I'm in northern IN and am envious of all the nice places to hunt that yield "real" treasure, good places around here are few and far in between. I have to admit though the feeling I get when I find a Merc or even a wheatie is a good one just because they are so hard to find. It would be nice to pull up something more valuable at times, but it's still the hunt that makes it fun for me. My wife thinks I'm goofy at times when I come home with just a few cents and am happy about it, I just tell her she doesn't realize how hard I have to work for those pennies sometimes. I can't wait to hear what she has to say when I bring her home a piece of jewelry worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. (In my dreams).

BEACHES, BEACHES.... We don't got no stinkin BEACHES!

At least any a sane person would want to visit except for perhaps three days per year. You know that the record rainfall for the lower 48 states is on the Olympic peninsula and I believe the second place holder for rainfall is in the Oregon coast range at Valsetz. The average in some areas is over 200 " of rain in a year. The world record for snowfall was for years held by Mt. Rainier, only to be eclipsed a few years back by Mt. Baker, about 100 miles north.

No, people in Washington don't spend too much time at the beach. Too much rain and nasty weather.

The "city" where I live was incorporated in 1948. Prior to that there were a few farming families in the region and not much more. There were no appreciable places of congregation of folks in the vicinity. 90% of the population has arrived since 1974 , roughly 10 years after the silver was taken out of US coins. That explains why it is so difficult to find any silver coins here.

Weren't there folks in the Midwest prior to 1974? As I recall from history there were at least a dozen or so.

Take care,

Mark

Well if so many people have arrived since 1974, you should of been buying land instead of scouring it for coins. Don't you have about 3 dozen ski lifts on every hill out there? You can hunt under those.

With all those mountains there should be some caves, somewhere? That Kristen Gum girl on the T V spends alot of time out there. Jade, Tourmalines, sun stones, fire opals, sea glass, pyrite and somethin or other, combined, fossils, sea shells, etc., etc. I'm surprised you have any time for detecting. Heck you got so much silicon out there you named a valley for it. that has to be worth somethin?

What do we have, a Windy City.

Dave

I have yet to see the Jade indication on my Elite 2200, but I am a novice and still learning. There are some limestone caves in Washington but they are about 300 miles away from where I live. I have been in some local lava cames but there are no valuable objects within them.

The ski lifts are all on private property and I doubt access would be granted, however it might be worth looking into.

I imagine there are some silicon based components inside my Elite but silicon isn't worth too much as just silicon.

Do you know why Chicago is called the Windy City? It has nothing to do with meteorology.

Hummmmmmm!!!!

According to this youtube video, the man found untold numbers of silver coins and war relics in........ Missouri. Isn't Missouri close to the Midwest? Isn't it, as a matter of fact. smack dab in the center of the heartland?

I rest my case.

Okay M, I'll give you that one. Missouri is in the heartland. good people, good neighbors, happy to have them. Smack dab in the center of the heartland, would be smack dab in the center of America and that would be Kansas.

Earlier you said something about Beaches, Beaches, we ain't got no stinkin beaches. Yet you claim to live in Washington State. Why do you people have towns called Long Beach and Pacific Beach?

How about Ocean Park, Ocean Shores, Ocean City, and Shoreline? Then there are also a number of towns with names that include words like Island, bay, port, harbor and lake. No beaches there either?

Here are some other places that sound like they have something to offer a treasure hunter. Battle Ground, Black Diamond, Cashmere, Richland, Ritzville, Goldindale, Silverdale, and my favorite Freeland.

No wonder so many people moved there since 1974, you have Freeland

Now here are someplaces I would avoid, Nine Mile Falls, that is way up there. Nooksack, don't even want to go there, Tokeland, I don't want to know, and Concrete, That would be tough diggin.

Since you rested your case counselor, I won't expect to hear from you on this subject again. But you know what they say " The grass is always greener on the other side of the..... ROCKIES!!!!!!!!!

This has been fun, I hope the readers enjoy it as well. Take care, Dave

I move for a mistrial since I didn't get closing arguments.

We have beaches, it is just that people don't spend as much time at them as in areas that have better weather.

Now, how about Chicago????? How did it get the moniker?

It has something to do with Cub fans and Bear fans and inhaling and exhaling. Think about it. That would be a topic for the Views forum.

Sorry Im LMAO @ you 2.....:rofl::rofl: I just come home from the bar, my girl kept me out late. Very good!

If you want to come to Michigan and give it a whirl. I got plenty of room I'll put you up for as long as you want.

Its not quite east or west, more in the middle east.LOL . Coins Coins Coins,,,, people walk across them every day. Getting permision to dig them up, no matter where you are , is the problem.

Good luck

I live about as far North and West as you can get in WA. State, I must be "lucky". I find a fair number of coins (not that many old), this month 1 gold ring, 1 silver ring, one totally thrashed pocket watch (conversation piece) and a whole lot of enjoyment swinging my detector. I have met nice people gone to spots I might not normally go and did I mention met nice people.
If you live anywhere near Bellingham WA, give me an email and we can meet up and detect. I may be wrong but spots to hunt are only limited to ones imagination and the other factor to this Great Hobby is the more you swing the more you find.:detecting:

I know that there are some great spots in WA to go MDing. Some of the cities are indeed old like Stillicoom and Vancouver each about 200 years old but compare that to people in FL or MA who can go after relics that are twice that old. In my city (Bonney Lake) there is not much to be had by way of silver or relics, since the city barely existed when there were silver coins in circulation. I have found perhaps a hundred coins in the past 60 days, sometimes a coin every 4 min or so but they are zinc pennies or clad coins, items that don't spin my crank too fast. There are "modern" treasures to be found for sure m(see my post about the silver ring I found), but I think it would be cool to find an old minniball or coin from the 1800s or before. That is not too likely where I live. If I want to have any chance of getting such items, I'll have to drive a considerable distance.

That is all I'm saying.

Mark

I was just asked to join the local historical society. They want me to help document the history of the community and getting a museum in place. Maybe I'll get the inside track on interesting places to MD. I would gladly donate items of historical significance to get the opportunity to go MD at old homesteads and encampments along the Naches Trail.

Ahhhhhh just listen those poor mid-westerner's cry,,,, They don't want you to know..........they can buy and pop of firecrackers all year long! Yes, FIRECRACKERS all year long. If we in Ca. are even caught with 'em on the fourth, it's 10 consecutive life sentences :yikes: Now which would rather do, pop firecrackers all year long, or dig in a cold, filthy creek for a bunch of silly 'ol gold nuggets. :clapping:
