An emotional goodbye to my 1793 Liberty Cap

Well, I just mailed the coin to one of the big auction houses. It looks like it will be going up for sale in September in Philadelphia at the Stacks and Bowers Americana Sale. I will let you know what it sells for then. In 29 and a half years of detecting, I have never sold anything I found so it was a bit emotional for me to part with it, no matter how much money its worth .

Good luck at the auction Gary and I can't blame you for selling it. I too have never sold anything I have found but I think I might do the same as you.

GK, did you contact them? How did they find out about the coin?

They say 5K or more is expected.. yes I contacted them and worked with a couple other places before I figured out that they would probably be the best bet.

Gary, good luck, I can't wait to hear what it goes for...probably paid off the CTX? Reason to keep searching for another one.
Jon

Thanks VT.. Most definitely did...

That was an amazing recovery Gary. And I understand your hesitation in putting her up for auction. I guarantee that you'll never forget that day, that hunt and even that particular hole you dug. But when it comes down to it, just the experience of finding something special is why we keep going back for more. Finding something that someone else considers to be of great value is just icing on the cake. (and a great way to pay for this addiction we call metal detecting) HH Randy

I remember in your original post when you found it that you were looking for a conservator. Did you have anything done to the coin to get it ready for auction or will the auction house take care of that...or does it just go up for bid as is. I'm just curious in case, although highly unlikely where I live, I ever find something that might be worthy to send up for auction. Good luck with it and I hope it brings enough so you're happy with your decision. I think you said you'll have to share some with the property owner and I'm sure the auction house will take a chunk, also.

Thanks Folks...
As far as cleaning and conservation goes it appears that I did the right thing by doing nothing except for soaking it in some water and lightly washing away a bit more debris on the surface and then leaving it at that. The auction house will take care of the rest as far as cleaning it further and taking some glamour shots for the auction. This company has many world record selling prices for coins under it's belt so I am trusting that they know what they are doing.

MAN! Bet it is tough to sell that beauty! Sold a few finds before. I wont be doing it again. I regret it!

Just found this thread ( I Iive under a rock). HOW EXCITING for you !!! Dun feel so bad about selling it. The coin will be appreciated by more people this way and you get some cash. And not a small amount it looks like. Spend the money and have fun. You will ALWYS have the pleasure of knowing YOU found the coin and returned it to the world to see,,,, fine job!

Congratulations!! Everyone has different feelings about what they do with their finds. I really like the finding part....and documenting it with pix etc.... but the only things I won't sell are my wife, my kids and grand kids, and my dog.....not necessarily in that order!!! Noone can take away that first moment of when you brought that beauty up from it's resting place. You'll have that memory to enjoy forever. Enjoy the $$$$ and go out and find some more. WTG. Good luck and HH. Bob.

Doesn't get any better. Cant blame you for parting with it. Best of luck with it during the auction. CCH
