An AT PRO beach day on the Gulf Coast ...

Willee - Texas

Well-known member
Took the AT PRO out to Bob Hall Pier and the condos just south of the Packery Channel jetties.
Had an odd situation ...

At Bob Hall pier and at the condos in the wet salt sand and in the hard packed sand the AT Pro worked perfect at both places.
Auto GB (around 13) ... full sensitivity all 8 ... Pro mode wide open with iron set to 40.
Quiet, deep, really nice. ( I LOVE IT)

But the beach in the photos at the condos ... the fluffy sand ... it had problems.
Same settings but it acted like it was in heavy trash ... I mean 15 blips of various tones with each swing.
Could not find a quiet spot to GB.
Turned the sensitivity down to 5 of 8 and it quietened down a lot but still just a bit of chatter.
At Bob Hall pier it work so good.
But here it went crazy.

Got out the E-trac ... and swept the sand to see if it was loaded with trash but the E-Trac ran smooth and quiet.
I dont know what is in that dry fluffy sand there at the condos but it is sure different from the sand a few miles away at Bob Hall Pier.
Need to investigate this further.

Didnt find much except for a few dimes and some new dropped pennies.
Missed the low tide and the sand today just wasn't right to give up the treasures.

I'm having a similar problem in my back yard with my ATP. I wanted to set up a test garden so I cleared all of the debris like leaves and twigs off the area down to the bare sand. There never has been any grass. Then I tried sweeping the area to sterilize it of trash. The sand is just pure sand with little to no organic matter in it. Each sweep produced multiple signals. Then I drug out my sifter with 1/2 inch hardware cloth covering it. Passing the sand thru the sifter produced nothing. This location is in central Florida. Our soil has practically no mineralization so I am at a loss as to what is causing this.

I went on to bury coins in the area but my readings are not very good. I can't pick up a penny, dime or nickel beyond 6" deep, a quarter or half beyond 8". Guess I should have waited until I had figured out what was causing all the extra signals first.

I'm rather new to metal detecting so I am at a loss as to what my problems are.

I had a similar occurance yesterday on a certain part of the beach with that constant chatter. When I moved to another part of the beach, the problem went away. I was also in the Texas gulf coast.
Stan.
