An 1847 large cent found on carnival lot!

They started moving the big dirt pile in the center so I figure I would go "poke around" for a little while. Not only did I, Jim aka dimeman score another mercury dime, I scored another large cent! Although someone decided to deface it :( With a magnifying glass I can see a date of 1847. This is my second one of the season! The absolute audio BLARE from it being an inch down (even with my limiter switch set to "on" ) ROCKED my skull when the detector went over it lol. It sounded like a aluminum soda can. BUT continually sweeping over the target told me it was small in size. So out with the lesche digger..... At first I thought it was a token of some sort because of the defacing of the coin but upon closer inspection, it states on the back ONE CENT UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Too bad they had to stamp these letters in it MVAN BROKLE :(

Thanks for looking - Jim

Nice find on the large cent. I found a 1854 lc but someone put a small hole in it and wore it as a necklace or charm. I would love to find one in great shape. HH

I guess it is no different with the many things they do with coins today. Too bad they had to make a hole through yours. I found an 1822 in good shape at the beginning on the season. No holes & stamping lol. This one got away un-harmed. Best of luck to you in finding an un-injured large cent! - Jim

Hey Jim , great diggings, the stamping on that is very old i can tell by the kind of script, nice silver dime as well hope you can get out more on that spot , cant waite to se the bust half dallor that will come out , and you must be on the verge of a gold ring as well

Jim

The Dimeman strikes again...!!! That large cent is a great find - shows the age of stuff to be found in the carnival site. I presume that would be someone's name on the coin - if you split the MVAN into M Van you have a dutch name M Van Brokle....

I can certainly understand that screaming in your ears at only an inch down - I sometimes pull 100 year old large penny's of the beach when the sand shifts the right way and usually after some rain as well - even at depth they still scream out.....

I hope you can get a few more hunts in - I reckon you might get a couple of monkeys off of your back given some more time on that site.

Just looking at those pictures of the site makes the mouth water - perfect detecting site....

You did good Jim!!
That stamp mark on the large cent gives it some personality.
Nice you were able to get the date off of it.
Hard to tell what other goodies lie just below the surface.
Keep it up,
Felix

I surely hope you are right Gunnar! A bust half would be a super sweet dream to have come out of this lot. I am trying to figure out how they stamped it with such precision.
(nice clear lettering) A gold ring would be nice as well but I have a feeling it is going to be found elsewhere.

I am really shocked at the large cent. Yes, that is exactly what I did with the name and truly believe how they intended the message on the coin. M. Van Brokle. Now I need to spend some time at the local library and see if any settlers had the name. Maybe it was a debt to be paid by van brokle and wanted the person that they had to pay to KNOW they paid their debt lol. Now if you look beyond the site, you can see the kids playing baseball. That section was part of this lot I am hunting. They are so strict they don't even let moles dig holes lol. Also they brought in a funny machine with a conveyer belt. This might be some time of screening apparatus for the dirt. I'll check it out closer on my next hunt. Stay tuned....

Thanks Felix. This is why I call it "pot luck" as I never know what is coming next. Hopefully after this rain storm / tropical storm leaves I will be able to get down to the site after work.

A couple of better pictures of the coin. Now, that I can see the date better, it is dated 1841.

Counterstamps are very collectible. That coin is worth more that way than if it had not been stamped, since it is so rough. There is a rich coin dealer named Q David Bowers who collects counter stamps. (hint hint).

That is a very nice find and one many wish they could find, the counter stamp makes it a bit more personal and I like to find anything with a persons name on it myself. I have a seated dime that was made into a love token as the back is smooth and some nice engraving on it, this to me is a prized possession for me as it is different and one of a kind. As far as large cents since detecting since 1973 I have only one large cent I been able to find as we don't see them up here in ND and only heard of 1 cap bust dime found.

Rick

Thank you Rick for your comments. I was not aware that coins like this were collectible as joecoin mentions as well. I would love to see pictures of the engraving on the love token. This is my first year ever for finding 2 large cent coins. As you well know, the Sovereign is a super machine and the finds I am making in my first year of owning one give proof to that. Take care - Jim

Great find. Large cents are one of my favorite coins to find. I've got a total of like 8 or 10 of them or so. One is an 1848 in mint condition wear wise, although it has some pitting. Not sure what the oldest date of those I have is.
