Johnmark, Simply put..............Get your Excal, put it in PP mode, adjust your Excalibur II's threshold knob down to just audible, stop { mark this as point A }. Now turn the knob to the point of where it turns off, { point B } From point A to point B there is still a threshold, but you can't hear it because it is not loud enough to hear. What the Amp does is open this area up to where you can hear it, it is amazing how sensitive the excal really is and how much one can miss. And just like having a bigger coil will give you a advantage over your fellow hunters in certain locations, this is just one more op to get more performance out of the Excalibur when you need it. If you have ever had a car that had the bottle on it {Nitrous oxide}, this is as about as close as this gets to that. And the good thing is you can turn it off if you find you don't need the extra kick. The Bad is ...it's not water proof, but has done very well with a few donks in the saltwater, and on shallow targets it can wake the dead. Had a video planned, just not enough time in the day, right now..............

Put on a WOT-problem solved
I would almost agree with you erikk, the big coils do get the depth and coverage. But by putting a big coil on your excal it will limit the versatility of that detector. Several of the beachs I hunt change so quickly I must be able to adjust to the conditions at that moment and the Amp allows me to have a wider range of options. I am thinking about the Sunray 12, I think I can swing that in the ruff waters of the Alantic...May have to ad another excal, cause I still love my 800 & 1000 coils.
