American pre Civil War silver found in South Wales!

After some household chores I popped up to the glorious Vale Of Glamorgan today to go to a farm I hadn't been to for over a year. The reason I went there was because believe it or not I dreamt about the farm last night. Being a big believe in Lucid Dreaming, and seeing as my dream had me digging everywhere I took it as an omen - and do you know what I was bloody right!

When I got to the farm I found the farmer immediately and his first response before I could utter a word was "Bloody Hell - I was talking about you last night!" How odd I hadn't seen him in a year I dreamt of his farm and it turns out he was talking about me - its turning into a strange day! It transpired that a relative of his had passed away and they were holding some kind of wake on the the relatives farm today. He said he had mentioned me as the guy who died has never allowed anyone bar family on his farm for shooting, rabbiting or detecting, and he thought it would be ideal for me to go to. With that he jumps in my Landy and is saying come on we will go there now! Within 10 minutes we are at the farm and I have been introduced to about 8 different people and they are quite happy for me to have a spin on their land.

Had a quick go and found about 15 Georgian and Victorian coppers, RAF button and grotty Roman Sestertious. Popped back to the farm to show that I had found and they were all astounded by the Roman coin. Naturally I gave it to them and in return was told to come and go as I wish and that the farm is over 100 acres of pasture! By now I was almost ready to faint. We jumped in the Landy again and I was given a tour of the land which stretches all over the place and shown which fields I could use - which was basically all of them! Swapped numbers with the new owner and went off for another spin.

Couple more coppers, then a lovely signal and out pops a Silver American Seated Half Dime dated 1838! What an odd find to turn up.It predates the American Civil War by 24 years! What the Hell is that doing in a field in the VOG? Any ideas on how rare it is? I know loads about roman and Medieval silver, but haven't gpt the foggiest on American coins. Help please. Any ideas on mint?

Diolch yn fawr

WOW! Neal, You have found something many over here spend thier detecting days dreaming about! And thousands of miles away too. I am told that my ancestors were from Cardiff, maybe I can find some still there and detect their fields. I haven't found anything close to that coin and I live In the US! Congratulations Neal the half dime is a real find here and twice as nice for you. According to the red book on American coins There were 2,225,000 minted and value is anywhere from $16 to $1,100 of course depending on condition. Congratulations!

Cheers buddysox - I am Cardiff born and bred and its where I live now. Out of curiosity whats your family surname. Interesting that its a scarce find in the USa - what it doing here in a field in the middle of nowhere? always amazes me how coins travel.

Thanks chipmonkey - its the first American coin I have ever found and looks like its a bit special.

Thanks for the replies - I am suprised at the value being so high - any idea on this one anyone?

You bet Neil, I too am always amazed at what I find and where. Last year I located a 2002 Russian 10 cent In a small mountain town park in Arizona! Not a big find but I would love to know the story of how it got there. I will be sending you a PM about Cardiff.

Dear Neil,

I'm afraid that you're in violation of a recent UNESCO mandate :nono: that specifically states that if you find a coin from another country on your soil and that coin is over 100 year old it must be returned to the country from whence it came. I will PM you my address so that you can mail it to me and help you return it to the proper authorities! :lmfao:

Seriously though that's one heck of a find and quite rare even in the US - I've found some Seated Liberty coins before, but never one that old nor a half dime. That was our old 5 pence coin when they were silver. Sounds like you have enough farm land now to keep you busy for the next 20 years or so. I hope to meet you sometime next time we are in the Bath/Bristol area.....my wife's family is from Keyncham and we try to get there at least once a year. I've done some detecting in the area and had a lot of fun. Sounds like you have some great new sites and I wish you well there!

Best Regards, Erik
