Amazed at Pinpoint Capability

Well, found my first wheats last night in the front yard. One was quite deep, over 7".
What is starting to amaze me is how well the Explorer can pinpoint on a good signal. I've had the unit less than a week and have my holes down to 4".
However, if there are multiple targets, it can get a little tricky. After retrieving a target, I always sweep the hole again, as well as the plug and dirt, to be sure that a 2nd target doesn't exist.
The idea of a probe, such as Sunray's can be handy I imagine. For those of you that have them, do you find yourself using them on deep holes, or small targets? Just curious.
Thanks

Describe the method you use for Pinpointing, I also find it easy to pinpoint, but others do have difficulty.
Thanks

Joe,
The pinpointing probe that SunRay makes is a must for many of us that have used it on the Sovereigns and now the Explorer. I cuts down the time to find the target and being it is a disc probe you can tell if the target is good or bad or if there is a junk item beside the good target.
I know on the targets for surface to around 3 inches you can find the target with the probe so you dont have to dig much of a hole at all. On deep ones I just dig out a plug and go into the hole with the probe to see where the target is and if it is a good or bad target. I have even had cases where the coin is deep and on edge and was off a good 3 or more inches to the side of the hole where I would have missed it if I didnt have the probe as I lost the signal with the detector, but was able to get it with the probe.
Good Luck
Rick

Hi Bill,
I'll do my best at explaining the method I use. I read the manual and Andy's book, and came up with this procedure. Works good for me.
1) Once I hit a target and verify it is worth going for, I'll pass the coil slowly over the area to get the best approximate position.
2) I then move the coil to the left or right until there is no tone. Leaving the coil at that spot, I press the Pinpoint button.
3) I then pass the coil slowly over the target area, listening for the cleanest, loudest tone. I then stop the coil at that spot and memorize a imaginary line down the center of the coil to the surface of the ground. This will be the X axis.
4) I then move my body 90 degrees from the point where I was standing, and wave the coil over the area again, keeping the center part of the coil over the imaginary line (X Axis) in step 3. I listen for the cleanest, loudest tone and stop the coil when found. Drawing another imaginary line down the center of the coil. This is the Y Axis. I then memorize the point that these two lines intercect.
5) This point is where the target is. Quite simple if you take your time. Since the center bar on the coil is approx 3 inches wide, the intersecting point is a mere 3" square. Give a inch or so for good margin.
Hope this made sense <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

is the x1 probe realy all its cracked up to be ? i have 2 garrett units also exp xs ,have never used a probe just got the exp.4 months ago only had it out twice.still trying to figure it out. i do have the stealth 8 incher by sunray. thanks for the input

Robert you dont know what you are missing if you are a land hunter if you dont have Sunray probe. The Sunray X1 and S1(for the Sovereign) are realy a 1 incch loop as it will do everything that the coils will do , but not as much depth as you coil is. What this comes down to is that you will find the targets faster, and know if it is good or bad as it disc like the coil does. I use mine for both the surface to 3 inches as it has around 3 inches or more of depth so I can find the target faster, without spending a lot of time chasing a target around in the grass or dirt. On the deeper targets I can pinpoint, dig out a plug and go into the hole with the probe and find the target so I wont scratch it or do any unessarey digging. There are other pinpointers on the market, but none will do as good as the Sunray pinpointing pobes. The only way you will see a ued Sunray probe is if the person sold their detector.
In fact is there anyone that is reading this post that has a Sunray probe and dont like it??
Rick

I am still waiting for my X1 to get here! Stay tuned....

I Hope the wait will be worth it and you will have wished you had ordered it sooner.
Ever notice when you are waiting for something it seems to take for ever, but the monthly light bill seems like it was just yesterday you Paid it.
Rick
