Am I weird or is this normal?

I am a young 32 year old guy with a hot girlfriend, had her for 5 years. My question is this, well first I am not ashamed of what I like, in fact I love it. I enjoy bird watching, photograpy, gardening, digital photos, treasure hunting. Everone in my area that I get intouch with about this is older than me. I prefer the company, I have to admit that, I do feel odd at times when I am at the Pub and bring up a new bird I saw and get ribbed about it. I dont care either way I am who I am, just wondering if there are any others my age that bird watch and the other hobbies i listed.

No... You are not wierd. You are just man enough to admit what you like and don't let those other guys stop you from enjoying it.
There are so many young men that will let others influence them so much that they end up missing what is important.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting

Fishing and detecting, thats my big 2. Never thought much about it ..... maybe I'm wierd too ....

Don't know what to tell you cuz I'm likely a freak type too. (opposed to the freak type 1 I guess ) Maybe that's you John Anyway, back to the point...
Before getting into detecting my hobby-passion-addiction was going to the gym and working out with all the juice monkeys. Got into weights when I was in high school, stopped for quite a few years than started up again. I was about 4 years straight when the tectin' bug bit me in the a$$ Haven't been back to the gym for a heck of a long time (and miss it) but I'll be dammed if I ain't gettin in there this winter. Now what I'm trying to say is ...Once I finish spotting one of the muscle heads finishing his set of barbell presses what do you think he is going to say when I ask him if he wants to see my old pennies
ps Your girlfriend have a sister? Send her far to the north!

Society, with the help of the media, wants to define what is wierd and normal in us human creatures. I have been a lone wolf type of guy all my life, choosing what I like and having a good time at it. My hobbies are by and large non-mainstream which suits me to a T. Metal detecting for me started as an offshoot (hah) from my hobby of traditional archery. I bought my first detector to locate my stray arrows. At the range where I shoot I not only found my arrows; I found LOTS of arrows, enough in one week to cover the cost of the detector! One thing lead to another and now detecting has become my favorite hobby. I have as much fun finding worthless modern odds and ends as I do finding the occasional old coin or jewelry item. Some of the stuff in my Bag-O'-crap gives me more joy than my slowly growing "goodies" collection. Part of the fun with metal detecting is learning what the detector is "telling" me. I will hoover over a good signal for minutes at a time, tweaking and tuning, and try to see if I can figure out what my detector claims to be buried. Sometimes I get silver fever and hunt seriously for it, but mostly I have fun being out in the world. Take a visit to Buriedcrap.com. It is a fun metal detecting site. The bottom line is, hang what people say! Have fun! Perhaps the reason you encounter older people who share your enthusiasms is that age breeds maturity and maturity allows greater freedoms. We all have to paddle our own canoes......

I have very similar hobbies Ronnie, and I dont care what others think about them. If they think you're weird because of what you like, then you've got a bad set of friends!

Ronnie,
I would be proud to call you a personal friend; live life like today is your last, I work in a hospital friend I know what I'm talking about. Be proud of what ever you enjoy doing. You will find that to lead all you have to do is ..........do. You did not list dope, liquor, or going out on your woman as a hobby.......I salute you my friend. Birdwatching?........one of the greatest sights I ever saw was a hawk fall a 100 feet and nail a rabbit dead center. Thats been 20 years ago and the boy who was with me and witnessed it..........we still get wide-eyed and act like kids to this day when we talk of it, my wife of 13 years tells me all the time..........till I met you I never knew what was out there in the wild, I just never realized! We were fishing in a crystal clear lake once and a beaver circled the boat looking at us.........not too impressive until I let it be known that the beaver was under the water looking up at us from a foot down.........we just froze and watched, then laughed till the tears ran down out faces. The sense of wonder is hard to descibe. We both watched a snake walk through foot high weeds once like he had legs and reach down grab a frog, look at us, turn around and take off still holding his head a foot above the weeds frog in mouth. We were so stunned by that scene we couldn't talk, we just stared at each other with our jaws on our chest. Your seeing things others will never have the privlege to see or take time to find out about. Enjoy!

I reckon they are secretly jealous of you! There is nothing wrong with any of the pastimes you mention, I enjoy gardening / photography / birdwatching too I have 3 nut feeders in my garden, and get a good selection of birds coming in every day! sparrows, blue tits, great tits, greenfinches and greater spotted woodpeckers to name just a few! Some folks are happy to just watch football and go to the pub ... that's up to them, you shouldn't feel like an 'outsider' just because you don't follow the herd!
Carry on enjoying the stuff YOU LIKE, and take thier ribbing with a pinch of salt HH charlie(UK)
Oh, PS. sorry, I accidentally deleted your e-mail you sent ... sorry!

I work in a hospital also. What I see day to day....
Consider yourself lucky that you can do the things you enjoy. Were all different from each other and should always respect each other. Personally I spend most of my spare time kayaking and detecting. I get ribbed alot about detecting "find any pennies lately?", but I dont care. Keep active whatever you do and thank God you can do what you do.
Neil

HA HA good try. But restassured she is a hottie. No I tell you what I will get one for ya. Tonight. take care Ronnie

Maybe some of the ribbers are insecure with themselves, and the others are just copying the behavior. After all, if someone is afraid to be nonconformist, they will feel threatened by someone who is strong enough to be different and want to put them in their place.
On the other hand, with our hobby, I can understand people thinking digging up stuff is a waste of time. Personally, I think quilting is a waste of time, but I would never tell my mom that! She makes quilts for people and gets great satisfaction out of it. Personally, I say just go buy a nice comforter and save all that effort. But to her, it's a great pastime.
No shame in detecting - shame on the losers who will razz you for it to your face.
