ALWAYS Fill Your Holes!

ALWAYS fill your holes. I do not care where you are or how remote you think you are. I do not care that kids leave holes in beaches or that the hole is in a mining area riddled with old timer mining shafts. Every detectorist that leaves open holes is giving ammo to people determined to shut us down. I am not saying I am perfect but I make a serious attempt to be an invisible detectorist both while I am detecting and by the evidence I leave behind.

All coil manufacturers should do what Minelab does and put that reminder on the coil.

I understand all the feelings about over regulation and such but things are the way they are. My dismay is directed more at the detectorists that by their actions cause my activities to be put under a spotlight. One sure way not to be my hunting buddy is to not fill your holes.

YES, YES & YES----FILL THEM HOLES (wherever you are at)!!!!-------We've got enough problems already with out bring extra problems on ourselves.-----Practice proper target recovery---ALWAYS!

Wow, never realized ML put that on their coils. Fill your holes people.... or else you will find yourself selling your MD on CL when your area is banned.

If you are a nugget hunter and don't fill in your holes you are asking for me or some one like me to come along and clean out your nugget patch. Nothing screams, "Try looking over here" in the desert like dig holes!

Happy Hunting!

Steve,

Thanks for posting this and I really support your efforts. I'm used to seeing advice to detect near where the old time drywashers left holes, but recently I read some advice for drywashers to drywash near where folks with metal detectors have left their holes. Aaaargh! We really need to put an end to this trend.

One suggestion is to take the well known Code of Ethics for Metal Detectors and make it a sticky here. We've started including it in each newsletter of the Reno Prospecting and Detecting Club:

Be a good ambassador for other detectorists by following this code of ethics for respecting nature, history, and property owners.
1. I will respect private property and will not metal detect without the property owner's permission.
2. I will not destroy property, buildings, or what is left of ghost towns and deserted structures.
3. I will never litter, always pack out what I take in, and remove all trash found.
4. I will leave all gates and other accesses to land as found.
5. I will not damage natural resources, wildlife habitats, or any private property.
6. I will use thoughtfulness, consideration, and courtesy at all times.
7. I will abide by all laws, ordinances, or regulations that may govern my search or the area I will be in.
8. I will fill all holes, regardless of how remote the location, and never dig in a way that will damage, be damaging to, or kill any vegetation.
9. I will report the discovery of items of significant historical value to a local historian or museum in accordance with the latest legislation.
10. I will be an ambassador for the metal detecting hobby.
Be polite and informative to those who inquire about your hobby

It is a big problem here in Oz guys not filling in their holes. A lot of blokes reckon it just the minority that don't fill them and that most do. Rubbish to that, in my experience the majority don't and only the minority do. Everywhere I go there are more unfilled than filled.
One more for the code of ethics.
When you see someone detecting don't pull up right next to them and start detecting the immediate area that they are detecting in!
The other week where I live a group that was being given a lesson on detectors by a well known local detector shop pulled right up within 50 meters of my vehicle, there were about five cars and 4WD's in their group. There was plenty of room in the surrounding bush are but they came right in on top of me, surrounding the area I was in. Guys came within just 15 meters of me. One, I could not believe it, was actually detecting around my 4WD, within about ten foot of it!
I resisted all temptations to lash out and packed up and left. As did another bloke not far away.
No wonder there are so many inconsiderate people who detect in Victoria where I live when they are being taught like that!
