Saturday, Laurie and I went to do a bunch of laundry at a laundromat. She bought about $20 worth of quarters. Last winter, she caught a couple silver quarters out of their change machine. So, I took all the ones I had, and lined them up on edge. I was looking for silver, but didn't see any. I did, however, see some obviously brand-new-looking reeded edges, so I checked all of those, hoping for some of this year's State Quarters. Wouldn't you know it, but the first "new" quarter that I grabbed, immediately caught my eye for a minute, before I realized what I was looking at? I was staring at the obverse of the regular quarter design. However, something wasn't right, and I couldn't put my finger on it right off the bat. I knew that the quarter looked and "felt" brand new, high relief, etc. Then it clicked. The raised design was frosted, and the background was mirror-bright. I knew I was holding a proof coin. I flipped it over, and sure enough, 1987S. That's my second proof quarter that I've found in circulation.
