G'Day all.
I got the opportunity to do a beach hunt down at the beautiful little town of Kiama, about 140kms south of Sydney, at Easter.
As there is a caravan park located only metres away from the south end of the beach, I figured that it would be fairly slim pickings, and I was correct.
It was still fun to do and managed to learn a little bit about the mind set of many detector operators. Firstly, I started at low tide, with the coil in the water (ankle deep) to see if I could find some jewellery, but no luck. I did note though, this was the first time that I have had falsing issues with the Ace.It would only stop falsing once I had dropped to 1 bar of sensitivity. In the end I raised it to 4 bars and put up with the regular low tones. Any higher than this and falsing was just chronic. As far as the mind set of detector operators goes: although I only found three or four coins on the beach itself, I went up to another very obvious spot, playground equipment and found about $7 in five minutes. This equipment was in a very popular picnic area of about 3 acres (all lawn) immediately behind the beach. The mind boggles at how little this spot had been detected given that there is a very inviting beach in front of it!
Did I detect this spot. Nope. Had my eye on a better spot. There is a reserve elsewhere in the town that hosts 2 separate markets on it, that I was aware of. These are my favourite spots. I had managed to obtain 3 photos of the markets that that are held here, before I came down to Kiama. However, they weren't very good and only gave me a partial picture on where the stall holders set up shop. Given that I have in the past, operated stalls of my own and detected these sort of spots before, I was confident of predicting the way the site was set up.
After hunting this site for a couple of hours (interrupted by storms) I found that I had under prepared. I only brought the large coil down, and should have packed the other 2, as the ground had a very high concentration of junk! (hence the heading). I had decided to hunt next to the pathways, as this is how most stall holders operate.
My finds totaled 2 $2 coins and a 20 cent piece. Pretty ordinary for such a site.
When we left town on the Monday, I got to go back to this site to check out the lay out of the market, as one was being held that day. I was disgusted :rage::lol: to find that they had set up with their back to the paths, or set up across them in vague rows on open lawn!
The end result is that I had only grazed the side of this site.:(
Oh well. There is aways next year.
Total finds for the week end, $15.
Mick Evans.
