Aluminum Cans and slaw

Coinseeker 78

New member
I have a problem with a lot of my good readings on coins turning out to be aluminum. Is there a way to eliminate aluminum without losing true coin readings? Thanks in advance.

I'll be interested in the responses to this post because can slaw still gives me fits at times. :surrender:

Aluminum cans can be "had" most of the time by raising the coil a foot or more off the ground to see if it still gives a good signal. If so...then it's probably a can.

If you listen closely to the pinpoint you can sometimes make out a rough size.
Can slaw will mostly be physically bigger and with some training you might be able to tell the difference between SOME of the targets.:detecting:

This helps me every now and then on other detectors to!

Hope this helps,
Eu

Thanks for the info from both of you. I went out and compared a crushed can to a quarter. The difference was significant. I am sure I will be digging less cans and large slaw in the future.

There is a big difference in sound of a fullly crushed can. Like Bryce said normally those can be determined by size or raiseing the coil up several inches. However, that small cut up stuff that falls in the cion range on the smartscreen is a challange. I dont disregard any of that as trash. For me shallow is easer to tell just because it still jumps around on the smartscreen.... but deep stuff you better dig. There are just too many great targets in that range. Now on deep targets when i pinpoint ill often get a digital read of 07-27... 27 for me is aluminum.

I use audio1 all the time with conduct sounds and most of the time I can tell a bigger than coin sized items by sound alone.
EU is right too, if you approach the target from 4 sides, you can generally tell it is bigger than a coin.
But since I relic hunt a good bit, I am hesitant to not dig those larger signals.
Even while coin hunting, a can pressed flat on end sounds mighty good when it is 12 to 15" down:biggrin:.
