Mine is an older model that didn't come with the endcaps. Even though they are easily available I decided to try this and I'll see how it lasts. Wear on the end of the probe has not been an issue. This is the same stuff you use to dip toolhandles. I can see a few useful applications for the dip. It insulates too, kind of a liquid "shrink wrap".
